Overview

The shift schedule for posting on the Social Media accounts is as follows:

Guidelines

Social Media is a tool that can be used to reach many people. However, to be most useful, time and effort must be spent to gain loyal and active followers who will engage with your content and share it with their own network. To do this it is important to keep accounts active, even during non-peak times. There are many ways to increase engagement, and the right way depends on the aim of the account. Here are a few suggestions suitable for a science communication account.

  • Since the IMC is a global project, it is important to spread posts out throughout the day to cover many timezones.
    • It's OK to post the same content multiple times to ensure you reach many timezones and those who may have missed the initial post, but try to mix it with other content to spread it out. Changing the wording helps.
  • Graphics:
    • Pictures increase engagement significantly. Use (appropriate) photos and images liberally. Note that pictures no longer count in the character limit on Twitter, so you do not lose any space by including a photo. Make sure you have the appropriate permissions for the photograph.
    • GIFs work well too on Twitter, but caution is advised. Some accounts (e.g. Fermilab) use GIFs with humour and this goes down well with their followers, but the humour should always be light and it should be used sparingly.
    • Videos are good as well, but people do not always watch them with the sound on if they are scrolling casually on their phone. In this case, large subtitles help.
  • Using a hashtag allows people to follow tweets in the same place from multiple accounts and over a period of time. For this year, the official hashtag is, #LHCIMC17.
  • Retweeting posts from other accounts who have talked about the IMCs shows your followers that there is activity even when you don't post directly.

Some general Twitter advice:

  • You can add a pinned tweet to the top of your profile. This could be a tweet with useful information for new people visiting your profile.
    • The pinned tweet can change whenever you want it to.
  • To send a message to someone, start your tweet with "@[USERNAME]". This tweet is not private, but will only come up on the timeline of your followers who also follow that account. The user will also be notified (if they have that setting allowed).
    • To ensure all of your followers see the message, add a small character such as a full-stop or comma to the beginning. E.g. ".@[USERNAME].
  • Sometimes you will want to link longer messages together. In this case:
    • Write the first tweet and post.
    • Then click the reply button and remove your own username.
    • Continue your message.
    • Repeat as necessary.
  • You may want to comment on a tweet with a new message for your followers. In this case you would want to click 'quote retweet'. On a desktop, you would see a comment box above the tweet you want to comment on before you click post.
