Data loss due to high voltage trips

The high voltage trips are the main source of data loss in 2012:

  • 0.46% of data was rejected (all sources : 0.88%).
It was largely reduced along the year due to 2 reasons:
  • More robust power supplies have been installed in April 2012 technical stop (after 1fb-1 was acquired) to supply the sectors found to be “fragile” in the past.
  • A “training” phenomena seems to happen for reasons not yet understood: the high voltage trips seem to mainly occur when the instantaneous luminosity is largely varied (over a few days period). After a couple of days with a stable peak luminosity, the occurrence of trips significantly decreases and then remains very low. When the collisions stopped or if the luminosity was very low during a couple of weeks (machine development, long technical stops...), a short "training" period was necessary again before the rate of trips decreased again to its habitually low level.

Time synchronization (with automatic drift compensation)

The mean time can be extracted for each FEB for each large statistics run (typically 100-200pb-1) using the full statistics of LArCells stream (partial event building stream). The mean FEB time per partition is plotted as function of time:

  • In Spring 2012, all FEB have been aligned.
  • Global variation of LAr timing due to varying lengths of clock optical fiber. Automatic procedure was implemented slightly after the FEB alignment (June technical stop – Run 206248)
  • Automatic procedure accidentally switched off during a couple of runs in Fall.
  • Timing also affected by FCAL faulty HV modules replacement in late Spring.

Display of an event affected by a noise burst

Example of a single event affected by a noise bursts recorded in empty LHC bunches in electromagnetic endcap (side A – positive pseudo rapidity). Characteristics of the noise bursts:

  • Seen only in presence of collisions.
  • Permanent topology (mainly affecting inner and outer rings of calorimeters).
  • Occurrence yield per 1mn luminosity block between 10% and 60% depending on instantaneous luminosity. On average, 20-25%.
  • Very short (usually <1µs).
  • Treated by time window veto (additional 0.2% inefficiency)

Distribution of EM endcap Y3sigma measured in LHC empty bunches:

  • Proportion of channels above 3sigma (sigma: electronic noise).
  • In absence of coherent noise, expected to peak around 0.13%.
  • 135 hours of collisions (around 1.7fb-1)
Large tails up to 80% symptomatic of coherent noise (noise burst). 2 step procedure implemented:
  • Identification of noise burst peak based on quality factor (red distribution).
  • Application of a time window veto of 50ms around the peak events to clean soft rise and fall of noise burst (green distribution).
After application of time window veto, almost all tails vanished:
  • Final cleaning will be applied at jet level to avoid any pollution.

Results from this study have been used to update each FEB timing offset in May 2012 from Run .

Average time per Front End Board in EM Barrel (EMB) with 8 TeV collision data on May 2012

With the increased statistic available in each run of 2012, the 896 EMB Front End Boards (FEB) have been aligned.

The average time for one FEB is computed as the result of a Gaussian fit including all the entries for all channels from this FEB.

Most of the FEB are aligned and centered to zero. The out-layers are due to the FEBs in the third layer (7.1% of the whole number of FEBs in the EMB) for which it was not possible to compute the average time because of lack of statistic. The sigma value given on the plot is the RMS of the distribution in a window of [-0.5 ; 0.5] ns.
