Enabling Sflow on the Force10 and HP switches

Sflow are supported in Force 10 switches and HP 3400, 5400 switches, but not HP 2650 switches.
There are two types of sample in sflow, flow sample and counter sample.
flow sample: sample of the header of the IP packets
Counter sample: sample of the statistic counter of the ports

HP Switches

  • Login into the switch as admin and enter the configure mode

  • Configure the IP address of the sflow collector (maximum 3 collectors can be enabled, from 1 to 3)
    sflow 1 destination 10.128.16.26

  • Enable sflow on the ports and set the sampling rate
    sflow 1 sampling a1 1024
Here the sflow sampling on port A1 is enabled at sampling rate of 1024, it means that 1/1024 of packets are sampled.
The sampling rate range is <50-1644170>

  • You can also configure the polling, which based on time interval
    sflow 1 sampling a1 100
Here the sflow polling on port A1 is enabled at the time interval of 100 seconds, it means that the counters are sent every 100 seconds.
The time interval range is <50-1644170>

  • Don't forget write memory to save your configuration!

Force 10 Switches

  • Login into the switch as admin and enter the configure mode

  • enable global sflow
    sflow enable

  • Configure the IP addresses of the sflow collector and the sflow agent (resides in switches)
    sflow collector 10.128.16.26 agent-addr 10.130.1.50

  • enter the interface circumstance and enable sflow on the port
    int gi 0/1
    sflow sample-rate 1024
    sflow enable
    NB. the sample-rate ranges <2-8388608> , but it must be the powers of 2. E.g 1024 4096 8192)

  • Don't forget to save your configuration as well!
