MuonID Meeting - 27 June 2008

* Minutes: - Xabier showed results using arrival probability and chi2 to build a confidence level with performance similar to the CL using the weighted distance. It is also necessary to calibrate the chi2 distribution for different momentum ranges. The final efficiency is shown to be very flat for low momentum, more than the combination IsMuonLoose+DLL cut based on weighted dist. Everybody agrees the Track fit must be implemented in C++. The robustness of the use of the arrival probabilities must still be checked. Erica presented a FOI tuning using reprocessed B->J/PsiKs events. It is possible to reduce the number of FOI parameters by 2, making a simultaneous fit of stations (M2 and M3) and (M4 and M5). The final performance of IsMuon is similar to the one obtained with separates fits of the FOI in all 4 stations. There was a general agreement that it may be useful to start the calibration, depending on the time needed to accumulate statistics, Finally, it was discussed that a clear comparison between the different methods must be presented. We would like to have in 15-20 days some plots to the note, so that we can have a draft by August and a presentation in the T/Rec by beginning of September. Erica will include guidelines for the plots. -

    -Xabier presented all the work done from track fit to DLL construction based on the fit Chi2 and muon probability to find a hit in a given station. Although the projector residuals seem to behave well, the chi2 keeps some dependence of momentum. This will be further investigated. Discussions/Comments raised: 1. Xabier & Co will think about what has to be checked and calibrated in order to use the extrapolator with real data (basically how to calibrate sigma). 2. In order to compare the performance with the other methods, the denominator of the efficiencies must include tracks for which the fit fails or for which there are not enough hits (nhits<2). The definition of muon geometry acceptance should also agree with the one used by Erica and Gaia (within M2 and M5 acceptance, not in the beam hole, not above the outer acceptance) 3. In general, we should try to present performance in a uniform way. We all aim to have a DLL providing a muon efficiency which in momentum and angle independent, so it is important to presen DLL distributions for different momentum an theta ranges or/and the performance as a function of momentum and polar angle.

    Miriam and Erica showed that a DLL built in 3 separate bins of momentum (3-6GeV/c, 6-10 GeV/c and >10GeV/c) and different angular regions (R1,R2,R3 and R4) already provide the same total muon efficiency for bb events and B->J\Psi K_s events. The procedure is simple and requires minimum statistics. More momentum bins can be used with the cost of increasing the statistics. A fit to the likelihoods should provide a softer DLL. This will be tested.

    Gaia presented results with a new definition of the IsMuon requirement, which is more robust against chamber innefficiency. Besides, she builts a new DLL, based on the sum of the distances from track extrapolation to closest hit in the minimum number of stations required in each momentum range, where each hit is weighted by the probability that a muon with that momentum reachs that station. For the muon hypothesis, the likelihood is a sum of two Landaus, with parameters which depend on momentum. So, by construction, the DLL cut would be a one step selection requirement and would be momentum independent. In addition, it is already more robust against chamber innefficiency, since it does not require hits in all stations (as it is done for p>10 in the standard IsMuon). For 100% efficiency, the misid rate is twice the misid rate obtained with the standard two step muon identification procedure. For 90% efficiency, the misid rate is approximately the same.

It is also necessary to calibrate the chi2 distribution for different momentum ranges. The final efficiency is shown to be very flat for low momentum, more than the combination IsMuonLoose+DLL cut based on weighted dist. Everybody agrees the Track fit must be implemented in C++. The robustness of the use of the arrival probabilities must still be checked. Erica presented a FOI tuning using reprocessed B->J/PsiKs events. It is possible to reduce the number of FOI parameters by 2, making a simultaneous fit of stations (M2 and M3) and (M4 and M5). The final performance of IsMuon is similar to the one obtained with separates fits of the FOI in all 4 stations. There was a general agreement that it may be useful to start the calibration, depending on the time needed to accumulate statistics, Finally, it was discussed that a clear comparison between the different methods must be presented. We would like to have in 15-20 days some plots to the note, so that we can have a draft by August and a presentation in the T/Rec by beginning of September.     -Xabier presented all the work done from track fit to DLL construction based on the fit Chi2 and muon probability to find a hit in a given station. Although the projector residuals seem to behave well, the chi2 keeps some dependence of momentum. This will be further investigated. Discussions/Comments raised: 1. Xabier & Co will think about what has to be checked and calibrated in order to use the extrapolator with real data (basically how to calibrate sigma). 2. In order to compare the performance with the other methods, the denominator of the efficiencies must include tracks for which the fit fails or for which there are not enough hits (nhits<2). The definition of muon geometry acceptance should also agree with the one used by Erica and Gaia (within M2 and M5 acceptance, not in the beam hole, not above the outer acceptance) 3. In general, we should try to present performance in a uniform way. We all aim to have a DLL providing a muon efficiency which in momentum and angle independent, so it is important to presen DLL distributions for different momentum an theta ranges or/and the performance as a function of momentum and polar angle.

    Miriam and Erica showed that a DLL built in 3 separate bins of momentum (3-6GeV/c, 6-10 GeV/c and >10GeV/c) and different angular regions (R1,R2,R3 and R4) already provide the same total muon efficiency for bb events and B->J\Psi K_s events. The procedure is simple and requires minimum statistics. More momentum bins can be used with the cost of increasing the statistics. A fit to the likelihoods should provide a softer DLL. This will be tested.

    Gaia presented results with a new definition of the IsMuon requirement, which is more robust against chamber innefficiency. Besides, she builts a new DLL, based on the sum of the distances from track extrapolation to closest hit in the minimum number of stations required in each momentum range, where each hit is weighted by the probability that a muon with that momentum reachs that station. For the muon hypothesis, the likelihood is a sum of two Landaus, with parameters which depend on momentum. So, by construction, the DLL cut would be a one step selection requirement and would be momentum independent. In addition, it is already more robust against chamber innefficiency, since it does not require hits in all stations (as it is done for p>10 in the standard IsMuon). For 100% efficiency, the misid rate is twice the misid rate obtained with the standard two step muon identification procedure. For 90% efficiency, the misid rate is approximately the same.

    She will check the misid rate obtained when requiring the same number of hits as the standard IsMuon requirement, and Erica and Miriam will check the misid rate when making the OR requirement used by Gaia. Gaia will also check the distance behaviour for different angular ranges and check that the procedure really provides a momentum independent efficiency.
