RCE Development Lab

Introduction

The RCE Development Lab is an R&D platform for exploring Detector Readout Applications and new DAQ architectures for ATLAS upgrade that is based on modular building blocks: the RCE (Reconfigurable Cluster Element), CIM (Cluster Interconnect Module) in the GEN-1 incarnation, and ATCA packaging standard. The GEN-3 version hardware evolved to the modern ZYNQ SoC since 2013, merging the RCE/CIM into a single type of board of COB (Cluster on Board) containing modular RCE mezzanine cards which can be more easily upgraded. The platform is further extended to stand alone bench top readout setups with the HSIO-II + RCE mezzanine that's suitable for medium scaled lab and test beam operations.

This Twiki will continue serve as the portal for general overall RCE R&D info for ATLAS upgrades.

Communications

The various communications related to the RCE development activities in ATLAS are conducted via two CERN e-groups listed below. The RCE development e-group is used only very rarely for major announcements of production rounds and events. The RCE test stand e-group carries the regular communications test stand meetings and discussions technical issues.

Many links below are pointing to SLAC confluence wiki pages shared with RCE users from other experiments. Those who already has a SLAC computing account should have access automatically. Those do not have a SLAC computing account, a trivial registration for just the confluence can grant access within a day.

Brief History

The RCE lab at CERN started in 2009 initially in a single location in Bat.32 (Lab 32). This subsequently split into several locations including initially in the Pixel Lab in Bat.304 (Lab 304) hosting another another ATCA shelf in Bat 161 for testing IBL chips since beginning of 2012. With the IBL stave and system test needs expanding in 2013, all sheves and GEN-1 RCEs in the Bat 32 and Bat 304 test stands were moved to SR1 to serve the various types of IBL tests in conjunction with HSIO. This setup further evolved to readout setups for various test beams at CERN/SLAC/DESY, and mobile stations for IBL connectivity tests. The first wave of GEN-3 COBs were deployed in Point-1 since summer 2014 for the new muon CSC readout system for Run 2. The AFP subsystem joined ATLAS data taking in 2016 using HSIO-2 as its readout. A large batch of HSIO2 with DTM/RCE mezzanine are distributed worldwide at the end of 2015 in conjunction with several COB/ATCA test stands for various ITk upgrade test stands.
