Early supersymmetry searches in channels with jets and missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS Detector (ATLAS-CONF-2010-065, 20 July 2010)

Event display of the collision (run number 158116, event number 5513627) which has m_eff of about 1.5 TeV when only the the leading three jets are included in the scalar sum increasing to about 1.65 TeV if all four high-energy jets are included. The size of the missing transverse momentum is about 100 GeV. The missing transverse momentum vector lies within the radius of a jet with a secondary vertex tag. All of the high energy jets are associated with the same primary vertex.

Early supersymmetry searches with jets, missing transverse momentum and one or more leptons with the ATLAS Detector (ATLAS-CONF-2010-066, 20 July 2010)

Event display of the collision (run number 155569, event number 5091167) with m_eff of 915 GeV when only the leading two jets are included in the scalar sum increasing to 1156 GeV if all jets are included. There are a total of 145 tracks associated with the primary vertex; no second vertex is reconstructed. The missing transverse momentum is 118 GeV. There is one well isolated positively charged muon with p_T of 25 GeV, and eta=2.33. That muon is cleanly selected with 11 hits on the monitored drift tubes, 6 on the cathode strip chambers, 5 pixel hits and 8 silicon strip hits.

An event display of the highest invariant mass diphoton event in which both candidate photons satisfy the more stringent photon identification cuts. The highest transverse momentum photon has pT = 194 GeV and (eta, phi) = (-1.32,-0.44). The trailing photon has pT = 173 GeV and (eta, phi)= (1.10,2.82). The diphoton invariant mass is equal to 679 GeV.

Event display of Run 167607, Event 63115223. This shows the highest-pT jet collected during 2010, which has pT of 1.5 TeV. The two leading jets are central high-pT jets with an invariant mass of 2.8 TeV. They have (pT, y) of (1.5 TeV, -0.58) and (1.0 TeV, 0.44), respectively. The missing ET in the event is 310 GeV.

Event display of Run 167607, Event 36526763. This shows one of the highest-energy jets collected during 2010, which is a jet in the FCal with energy of 3.37 TeV. This jet has pT of 120 GeV and y = -4.0. The energy that its constituent clusters deposit into each of the three FCal layers is shown at the top of the figure. The boundaries of the FCal at approximately +/-450 mm and +/-100 mm correspond to |eta| = 3.1 and |eta| = 4.9, respectively.

Event display of Run 167607, Event 40296085. This shows the highest-mass central dijet event collected during 2010, where the two leading jets have an invariant mass of 3.1 TeV. Event 34533931 of Run 166658. Brief description: leptonic top candidate formed by high pT electron (145 GeV, 11 o’clock), moderate Emiss (1 o’clock), and the b-tagged jet at 12 o’clock. When reclustered with R = 1.0 it acquires a large pT , mass and 1 → 2 splitting scale as it absorbs the electron. Three jets between 4 and 6 o’clock are identified with the hadronic top quark. When reclustered with R = 1.0 the three jets merge into a single jet with mj = 197 GeV, sqrt(d12) = 110, sqrt(d23) = 40. Legend: jets indicated in red correspond to R = 0.4, jets in green to R = 1.0.

Figure 21:
Event 106929590 of run 167576. Brief description: The leptonic top candidate is formed by the isolated muon at 2 o’clock, the Emiss separated by ∆φ = 0.27 rad and the b-tagged jet at 1 o’clock. A second muon reconstructed inside this jet corroborates the heavy flavour hypothesis. In the opposite φ hemisphere, between 7 and 8 o’clock, three jets are reconstructed with R = 0.4. The picture does not change with R = 0.6, but with R = 1.0 the three jets merge to form a single jet with a mass of 225 GeV. Legend: jets indicated in red correspond to R = 0.4, jets in green to R = 1.0.

This event display is for the highest invariant mass dielectron event. The highest energy electron has an ET of 390 GeV and an (eta, phi) of (-1.02, 0.86). The event also contains a photon candidate with an ET of 36.5 GeV and an (eta, phi) of (-1.21, -0.82).

A search for high mass resonances decaying to tau+tau- in the ATLAS detector (ATLAS-CONF-2012-067, 30 June 2012)

A high-MT event observed in the τhτh analysis (Run 189822, Event 86849215), which features a highly-collimated 3-prong tau candidate back-to-back with a 1-prong tau candidate that punches through to the muon spectrometer. Both tau candidates deposit significant energy in the hadronic calorimeter and have very high tau identification scores. This suggests that this is a real ditau decay (eg. a high-mass Z/γ*τhτh event).

A high-MT event observed in the μτh analysis (Run 191920, Event 25878131), which has a forward 1-prong tau candidate with pT = 310 GeV, a forward muon with pT = 340 GeV, and ETmiss = 63 GeV. The combined MT(μ, τh, ETmiss) = 711 GeV. This event appears to be most likely a high-mass Z/γ*μτh event. The tau candidate deposits most of its energy in the hadronic end-cap calorimeter (HEC), with an EM-fraction of only 1.5%; consistent with a 1-prong tau candidate with no π0s. The track pT = 300 GeV is consistent with the calorimeter measurement calibrated to give the tau pT. The hadronic tau candidate was energetic enough to produce hits in a single end-cap MDT station (part of the muon spectrometer), however, it does not produce a muon candidate. This signature is consistent with high energy pion punch-through.
