CSC book results

As of January 2009, the most complete studies of the ATLAS potential for top physics are documented in the paper Expected performance of the ATLAS Experiment, Detector, Trigger and Physics, published online as CERN-OPEN-2008-20. The 'Top Quark Physics' chapter of this 'CSC book' contains sections on:

  • Top Quark Physics at ATLAS (introduction)
  • Triggering top quark events in ATLAS
  • Jets from light quarks in ttbar events (including jet calibration)
  • Determination of the top quark pair production cross-section
  • Prospects for single top quark cross-section measurements
  • Top quark mass measurements
  • Top quark properties (top charge, spin, polarisation, rare decays and reconstruction of ttbar resonances)
Note also that the use of ttbar events for determining b-tagging efficiencies is discussed in the 'b-tagging' chapter of the CSC book, in the 'b-tagging calibration with ttbar events' section.

The following sections give references to complementary studies, divided by topic. Some of these results pre-date the CSC book but are still relevant, while others are more recent studies, done since the CSC book was produced. Where no information is given, the CSC studies still represent the latest work.

Top pair cross-section

The following two notes describe the prospects for measuring the top cross-section with early data at 10 TeV centre-of-mass energy:

  • Prospects for measuring top pair production in the dilepton channel with early ATLAS data at sqrt(s)=10 TeV (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2009-086).
  • Prospects for the top pair pair production cross-section at sqrt(s)=10 TeV in the single lepton channel in ATLAS (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2009-087).
These results supersede those in the CSC book which relate to studies for 100 pb^-1 at 14 TeV.

Top mass

The most up-to-date results are given in the following PUB note:

  • Prospects for the measurement of the top quark mass using the template method in early ATLAS data (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2010-004). This note describes the prospects for the top mass measurement in 2010-2011 data using 1D and 2D template fits, and exploiting the measured ratio of the top quark and W boson masses to reduce the jet energy scale uncertainty.
Older results are given in the CSC book.

Single top production

In addition to the single top results in the CSC book, the following results are also publicly available:

  • Strategy to Search for Single-Top Events using early Data of the ATLAS Detector at the LHC (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2010-003). This note describes the strategy for searching for t-channel signal top quark production in early LHC data, including techniques for evaluating the dominant backgrounds from data.
  • Prospects for associated single top quark production cross-section measurements in the dilepton decay mode with ATLAS (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2009-001). This note complements the CSC book studies of Wt associated production in the semileptonic channel with an analysis using the dileptonic channel, where both the W and top decay in leptonic modes.

Top properties

In addition to the top properties results in the CSC book, the following results are also publicly available:

  • Reconstruction of High Mass ttbar Resonances in the Lepton+Jets Channel (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2009-081). This note shows the ATLAS potential for reconstructing highly boosted top quarks, where the decay products are no longer well-separated in the detector, leading to signatures involving non-isolated leptons and monojets.
  • Prospects for early ttbar resonance searches in ATLAS (ATL-PHYS-PUB-2010-008). This note explores a variety of ttbar reconstruction schemes, for both low and high mass ttbar pairs, and explores the limits which can be set with early data.
As well as the above, the following older notes on various top quark properties may still be of interest.
