ADAMS Ranks

• Ranks are introduced in ADAMS as of April/May 2015. More info can be found here: https://apex-sso.cern.ch/pls/htmldb_edmsdb/f?p=273:3
• To get access to the LHC tunnel one needs to have the corresponding "Training Ranks" (before the change, the formal requirement was to have followed certain safety courses)
• Effectively, the ranks are a "layer" on top of the safety courses. One gets a specific rank by following one or more safety courses
• The idea is to provide better flexibility when there is a change in the safety courses. E.g. 2 different safety courses can provide the same rank. If one course becomes obsolete or is replaced, this does not have impact on the persons's rank or access rights

ADAMS -- check your access rights

• Go to http://adams.web.cern.ch
• Click on "My Accesses"
• Look for "LHC-TNL"
  • Clicking or hovering over the elements on the line provides information about the status and the needed actions for this access

Safety courses

• Courses on SIR (Safety Information Registration):
  These are online self-training modules, which can be followed on https://sir.cern.ch
  
  1. CERN Safety Introduction (replaces the old "Basic Safety (Levels 1 and 2)" course) - appears to be renamed to "Safety at CERN"
     
  2. Electrical Safety Awareness (New) (NOT "habilitation electrique"!)
     
  3. CERN - Beam Facilities
     
  4. LHC - Machine (replaces "Safety during LS1", which on its turn was a replacement of "Specific Risks (Level 3)" and "LHC Machine (Level 4)" during the LS1 period)

• Radiation Protection (this course is mandatory to obtain a personal dosimeter)
  It is a classroom course. To register for the course:
  • Go to cta.cern.ch
  • In the field "Course or Competency" type "radiation protection"
  • Click on "Radiation Protection - Controlled Area - CERN Employees and Associates" (or the one relevant to you) and sign-up for the course via EDH

• Self-rescue (aka biocell or oxygen) mask training
  It is a classroom course + a practical exercise. To register for the course:
  • Go to cta.cern.ch
  • In the field "Course or Competency" type "rescue mask"
  • Click on "Self-Rescue Mask - Initial" and sign-up for the course

• If you are not sure which courses you still need in order to access the LHC tunnel: follow the steps described here. Note that the old courses are not shown on SIR, and that one is not obliged to follow the new "replacing" courses. For example, you have followed "Basic Safety (Levels 1 and 2)" some time ago. Now on the SIR webpage you will not see this course (it does not exist anymore), while the new "replacing" course "CERN Safety Introduction" will appear as "not taken". Still, the fact that you have a valid "Basic Safety (Levels 1 and 2)" is known by the system, i.e. you do not need to follow the new course in order to get access to the tunnel.

EDH access authorization

• Access authorization should be requested after the safety courses above have been attended. Access can be requested via EDH
• Fill-in an EDH request for accessing zone "LHC-TNL"
  • Go to https://edh.cern.ch/Document/General/ACRQ
  • A list is given of the Existing Accesses. One can request access rights by clicking on "+Add" at the bottom, under "Required Access Line Item"
  • Do not change "Access Site" and "Access Building", and for "Access Zone" select "Access to LHC Tunnel Areas (LHC-TNL)"
  • Fill in the Start Date, End Date and Justification, and send your request

Equipment needed when going to the tunnel

• Personal dosimeter
  • See https://dgs-dep.web.cern.ch/content/dosimetry/personal-dosimeter-employed-or-associated-members-personnel
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  Available at the CERN Store. It might be possible to borrow certain equipment from colleagues
  1. Helmet and a headlamp
  2. Safety shoes
  3. Self-rescue (aka biocell or oxygen) mask

IMPACT access request

• After all courses, access authorizations, and safety equipment are OK, one needs to request an access via IMPACT (https://pptevm.cern.ch/impact/)
• A form must be filled, specifying the reason and the period of the access (can extend over many days)
• Foresee a few days for the approval of the request
• A single request can be made for a group of people
• People can be added to an already existing request (also requires approval)
