Perform design, construction and installation studies for a beam shape imaging detector, based on vertex reconstruction of beam-gas interactions. The goal is to provide emittance measurements at the LHC.

  • Use experience from VELO beam imaging at LHCb
  • Discuss possibility to install a new, relatively simple device at the LHC
  • Discuss gas target options: use BGI pressure bumps, or install an independent vacuum chamber
  • Precision goal considered in design studies:
    • statistical uncertainty: 5% in 3 min for 10^11 p/bunch
    • systematic uncertainty (vertex resolution): 5%
    • know beta with similar or better precision!
