The LeadGlassCalorimeter is a detector that measures the energy of particles by fully absorbing them and measuring the light produced in the interaction. They are composed of a Leaded glass block coupled to a PhotoMultiplierTube. The absorber presents 24.6 radiation lengths to e/gammas traveling head on through the block. The nuclear interaction length should be on the order of 25cm.

The BL4S modules were originally made for the Opal experiment. http://opal.web.cern.ch/Opal/tour/eb.html They came to BL4S as extras from NA62, who use them as Large Angle Veto (LAV) detectors.
