Scintillator detectors are widely used to measure radiation. When a charged particle pass through the scintillator, it excites the atoms of the scintillator material. This causes the light emitted. When coupled to an amplifying device such as a PhotoMultiplierTube, these scintillations can be converted into electrical pulses which can then be analyzed. Scintillators have good time accuracy and high efficiency, making them useful as triggers or vetos. As particles lose energy randomly though the scintillator material, the amplitude of a signal is not particularly useful, though may aid calibration.
