How to Start/Stop a Run

Starting a run

  • If no Run Control window is present, open one by clicking on the link present in the desktop and sign in by clicking on the key logo on the top right corner of the page and entering your CERN credentials when prompted.

  • Select Partition 0 browsing the tab menu.

  • Click on the (open) lock icon next to the Partition top node and select Take to get the exclusive command of the Partition.

  • Check that the selected artdaq folder corresponds to the one reported in the whiteboard.

  • Check the configuration is OK by controlling that:
    • All APAs have everything under their trees included (i.e., red), unless otherwise instructed.

    • Dispatcher1 is excluded.
    • Online Monitor is included.

    • Initial state is UNKNOWN for everything included.
  • Right click on Partition 0 status and select BOOT.
  • Wait 1-2 minutes for everything to boot. If something fails to boot, shutdown individually and try again. If still no response, go to the ProcessManager panel and force shutdown. If that doesn't work, contact a DAQ expert.
  • Click CONFIGURE from the Partition 0 status once all the included processes are BOOTED and select the desired configuration and Run type from the flashing drop-down menu. The standard physics configurations to use is generally the latest np04_WibsReal_Ssps one (i.e., the np04_WibsReal_Ssps00XXX, with the highest XXX number).
  • Select START from the top node to start a new run once status is CONFIGURED (all boxes blue). Run number will be automatically fetched.
    • If one or some of the RCEs do not go into running mode (do not become green) click on it to open the COB_RCE panel. Click on CHECK STATUS to get a report of RCE status in the side white box. After that, click on RESET and then POWER CYCLE. Once the RCE(s) has(have) been power cycled, shutdown the process from the Partition status tab and restart.
  • The system is now RUNNING (all boxes green). The previous step enables the optional "Trigger options" panel. Select a trigger rate and ENABLE the triggers if you want random triggers. If you instead want to take beam data, don't touch the "Trigger options" panel and move to the next step.
  • Click ALLOW TRIGGER (button on the side for the "Trigger option panel" to start the actual data taking.
  • Click LOG VIEWER on the right hand menu to open the log window (for debugging purposes).
  • Click TRENDS on the right hand menu to check that the event builder rate approximatively matches what you selected at the beginning of the run (~167 MB or 34 MB for each RCE).

Ending a run

  • Select STOP from the Partition 1 status window.
  • After stopping the run, use SHUTDOWN to terminate and kill the processes. The system will then transition to UNKNOWN state.
