Cloud Shared projects for CMS
Virtual Machines, VMs, at CERN are managed via
OpenStack, a management software for cloud based computing.
OpenStack resources consist of both CPU and disk space. Some disk space is CPU bound (similar to memory and network) but there is also VM-independent storage.
OpenStack resources for CMS will be charged to CMS. For such resources, the VOC will be the owner; and the requestor will be the administrator. Thus any requests for CMS
OpenStack resources need to go through the VOC who will guide and assist in acquiring and setting up of the resource.
Based on this information, if you need a shared project in
OpenStack keep you should keep in mind the following guidelines:
- All shared project under CMS should be requested through CMS-VOC (cms-voc@NOTSPAMcern.ch): The VOC will request the resources needed based on the requestor information.
- The VOC act as the ownership of the project and will be responsible of create/delete any virtual machine in the project.
- The requestor act as an administrator of the project and will be able to start/stop any virtual machine in the project.
- All virtual computing operated machines are deployed and maintained through the configuration management system Puppet.
- The requestor notifies VOC when any significant change or configuration is made in the virtual machine: add package, deploy service; in order to maintain the virtual machine configuration through Puppet.
- Any quota change request is made through the VOC.
