CVMFS and CMS

Introduction

  • CMS intends to move to use CVMFS as the main GRID site software distribution mechanism
    • As an alternative, CMS allows sites to distribute the CMS software themselves to their workernodes, if the installation of new releases is done through an automatic cron-based setup
  • CVMFS for CMS can be divided into two parts:
    1. CVMFS master installation
    2. CVMFS service at CERN (stratum 0) and T1 sites (stratum 1) and the workernode mounts at the sites

CVMFS master installation procedure

  • CVMFS master is installed on a cvmfs installation server and then committed to CVMFS (CVMFS gets notified that there are changes and publishes them)
    • commit step can take from 30 min to 3 hours
    • commit step is the final step, any corruption of the installation has to be detected beforehand

  • Current setup: Bockjoo is handling the installation
    • Machinery is rather automatized. It checks once per hour for new stuff to be deployed and does it automatically.

  • Installation verification:
    • Currently: rpm exit codes

CVMFS deployment

  • CMSSW releases
  • CRAB releases are also deployed in CVMFS
  • Gridpacks
  • [NEW as of 03FEB2013] Sites can install using the installation script (NFS capable CVMFS) mentioned in the CMSSW Deployment OSG Twiki
