Computing Setup at CMSDASia Taipei

NEWS

  • [2012/08/08] We borrowed a switch from the company with 10Gbits ports. Temporarily recovered.

  • [2012/08/06] After the power-cut on Aug/4, our network switch (the 10Gbits one) was out-of-order. We are still trying to find a replacement. The current system is running on a 1Gbits switch now.

Introduction

We have prepared a small, independent cluster named "mars" for the CMSDASia exercises. The system spec is summarized below

  • 6 computing nodes: Intel Xeon CPU E5450 3 Ghz, 8 cores, 2 Gb ram per computing core (there are 48 cores in total), 1Gb network connection to the switch.
  • Storage: a NAS with a 10Gb connection to the switch
  • Limitation: this system is not part of the grid.
  • Contact: Kai-Feng Chen, Kai-Feng.Chen@cernNOSPAMPLEASE.ch (any comments/suggestions are also very welcome!)

Minimum requirement

You have to bring your own laptop to CMSDAS, with a ready to use terminal program and a installed X.org server.

  • If your laptop runs linux, everything will be fine. Just use your native terminal and X server.
  • If your laptop is a mac, please ensure you have installed the X11 application or Xquartz (if your laptop runs 10.8 Mountain Lion, you have to install this). The terminal program comes with OSX should be good enough.
  • If your laptop runs Windows, you may try Xming or Cygwin/X. If you need a terminal program, putty could be a nice choice.
  • If you are new to all of these unix operations, please try to follow the pre-exercises set #1 at least.

How to login

Direct ssh login is only allowed for the connections from NTU, CERN or LPC. If you want to connect from your place, you may connect to CERN or LPC first and connect to the cluster. Our you may send us your IP or hostname, we can include your IP into the white list.

ssh -Y mars.phys.ntu.edu.tw [This will lead you to the gate machine "mars".]
locallogin [This will redirect you to one of the 6 computing nodes "deimos".]

This is what you shall see:

pluto:~> ssh -Y mars.phys.ntu.edu.tw
kfjack@mars.phys.ntu.edu.tw's password:
Last login: Sun Jul 29 12:59:24 2012 from pluto.phys.ntu.edu.tw
[mars] ~ $ locallogin
Warning: Permanently added 'localhost' (RSA) to the list of known hosts.
Last login: Tue Jul 17 15:08:43 2012 from cegate.gridlocal
[kfjack@deimos13 ~]$

Remarks:

  • Please do not run any jobs on "mars" directly (this is a gate with weak CPU), just type "locallogin" to the computing nodes.
  • Your home directory is placed under the NAS, just do your exercises at your home directory.

How to initial CMS software / local root for CMSDAS

Just one line

source /home/cmsdas/env.csh [This should set everything automatically, including a local root that is compatible for RooStat exercise.]

If you need CMSSW 5_2_X and 5_3_X, please remember to set SCRAM_ARCH as slc5_amd64_gcc462 before the source command:

setenv SCRAM_ARCH slc5_amd64_gcc462 [For CMSSW_5_2_X, CMSSW_5_3_X]
source /home/cmsdas/env.csh

You may try the installed local root (ver>5.32), may be upgraded again. Surely if you initialize a CMSSW environment, the root version will be replaced with the one comes with CMSSW.

kfjack@deimos13 ~]$ source /home/cmsdas/env.csh
[kfjack@deimos13 ~]$ root -b

Where are the files for exercise?

They are just under

ls /home/cmsdas/store/user/cmsdas/2012/

General guidelines:

  • Please do not copy the files to your home area unless necessary. Please note many of the files used in the exercises are quite big. There is only one commonly shared NAS, so make a duplication will not help at all. If most of people are accessing the same file, the cache of the system will work better.
  • You may already notice the directory structure under /home/cmsdas/store/ is somewhat familiar. Indeed there is an auto-maping from /store/ to file:/home/cmsdas/store/ for the installed CMSSW. So most of the case you do not need to change the file directories in the exercises.

Remarks (some other technical details)

  • The CMSSW we installed (when you source /home/cmsdas/env.csh) is from cvmfs. This is a kind of proxy based file system. When you access to the CMSSW, the files will be first copied from CERN and cached in NTU proxy. You may find a kind of delay (up to few seconds) when you try to access to the file for the first time. This is normal. This system (cvmfs) provide more CMSSW versions in principle.
  • However we have prepared a local installation of CMSSW. It has most of the needed versions in the exercises. You may initial this installation with source /home/cmsdas/env_local.csh instead.
