TOP-13-014 (ATLAS-CONF-2014-008, CDF Note 11071, D0 Note 6416): First combination of Tevatron and LHC measurements of the top-quark mass

Status: Analysis approved by the ATLAS, CDF, CMS and D0 Collaborations - March 2014

This is the first combination of the Tevtron and LHC measurements. It uses the Tevatron Run II results from CDF and D0 and the same 7 TeV results from ATLAS and CMS as were used for the September 2013 LHC combination (CMS-PAS-TOP-13-005 and ATLAS-CONF-2013-102). The Tevatron and CMS results are all published. The two ATLAS measurements are still preliminary.

Abstract

We present a combination of measurements of the mass of the top quark performed by the CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron and the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The Tevatron data correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 8.7 fb-1 of proton-antiproton collisions from Run II of the Tevatron at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The LHC data correspond to an inegrated luminosity of up to 4.9 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions from the run at center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The combination includes measurements in the lepton+jets, dilepton, all-jets and Etmiss+jets final states. The resulting combined measurement is 173.34 +/- 0.27 (stat.) +/- 0.71 (syst.), with a total uncertainty of 0.76 GeV.

Results

  • 11-measurement combination: ATLAS (lepton+jets, di-lepton), CDF (lepton+jets, di-lepton, all-jets, Etmiss+jets), CMS (lepton+jets, di-lepton, all-jets), D0 (lepton+jets, di-lepton)

mass = 173.34 +/- 0.27 (stat.) +/- 0.71 (syst.) GeV

or separating out the iJES statistical contribution from the quoted systematic uncertainty:

mass = 173.34 +/- 0.27 (stat.) +/- 0.24 (iJES) +/- 0.67 (syst.) GeV

Chisq = 4.3 / 10 dof, Probability = 93 %
