Performance of Dstar reconstruction on first Runs of Run3 at 900 GeV

Abstract

In this note the performance of D* meson reconstruction on MinimumBias datasets of the first runs of Run 3 at 900 CMS.GeV center-of-mass energy, in 2021 and 2022, is documented.

ΔM=M(D*)-M^(D0) distributions for D* to D0pi, D0 to Kpi for pT(D*) < 3.5 CMS.GeV (left) and pT(D*) > 3.5 CMS.GeV (right) for the full 2021 900 CMS.GeV pilot run MinimumBias sample, prompt reconstruction, 1 nb-1.

The fitted continous shapes in blue describe the data points (bullets) for both signal (solid) and background (dashed). The normalized wrong charge distribution (red) is a good proxy of the background.

Same distributions for the same 2021 pilot data, rereconstruction with better tracking and vertexing code, calibration and alignment. The improvement in mass peak resolution (both lower and higher pT) and signal to background ratio (lower pT) is clearly visible.

Same distributions for the first "good" 2.1 nb-1 of run 2022A, 900 CMS.GeV running, prompt reconstruction. The increased statistics is clearly visible. The prompt reconstruction mass resolution is already similar to (lower pT) or better than (higher pT) the re-reconstruction of the 2021 pilot data.
