Goal of the page

Listing the available alignment constants (Alignments, records TrackerAlignmentRcd, CSCAlignmentRcd and DTAlignmentRcd), alignment position errors (APE, records TrackerAlignmentErrorRcd, CSCAlignmentErrorRcd and DTAlignmentErrorRcd) and surface deformations (record TrackerSurfaceDeformationRcd) with their "interval of validty" (IOV, for alignment it is a range of run numbers) with some comments about validity. Also the tags of the GlobalPositonRcd, defining the relative position of the subdetectors, is listed.

General Information

Usual jobs should access constants via global tags. SWGuideFrontierConditions lists the existing global tags and tells you how to find out which record specific tags belong to them.

More up-to-date information about existing tags and their IOVs can always be found via the database web interface command line tools like cmscond_list_iov.

Database Connection Strings

In the following <abX> is release series specific and stands for e.g. 20X. CMSSW_2_2_X uses CMS_COND_21X_ALIGNMENT as well.

Reading

  • Using Frontier (recommended): frontier://FrontierProd/CMS_COND_<abX>_ALIGNMENT
    • cms_cond_Xyz tools might need frontier://cmsfrontier.cern.ch:8000/FrontierProd/CMS_COND_<abX>_ALIGNMENT
  • Directly accessing database (for very rare test): oracle://cms_orcon_adg/CMS_COND_<abX>_ALIGNMENT
  • Note special case for CMSSW_2_Y_X constants migrated to CMSSW_3_1_X: frontier://FrontierProd/CMS_COND_31X_FROM21X
  • All CMSSW_3_X_Y (and even CMSSW_4_X_Y) releases read from CMS_COND_31X_ALIGNMENT (or CMS_COND_31X_FROM21X, see above)
  • There is also CMS_COND_310X_ALIGN hosting (for technical reasons) the surface deformations, readable since CMSSW_3_10_X.

  • Please follow the naming conventions for tags given in ConditionsTagNaming, see also GlobalTagPolicy.
  • Development/preparation DB (copied to production DB once release is closed, medium expert task): oracle://cms_orcoff_prep/CMS_COND_ALIGNMENT
  • Recommended way for regular uploads: DropBoxOffline
  • Online DB (expert task within .CMS cluster, see ClusterUsersGuide):
    • The dropbox mechanism using the directory /nfshome0/popcondev/AlignJob/ was recommended way - still working? Better use offline dropbox above.
    • Uploading directly using cms_cond_Xyz tools (might not work anymore):
      • Real DB (streamed to offline production DB): oracle://cms_orcon_prod/CMS_COND_<abX>_ALIGNMENT
      • For testing (not streamed): oracle://orcon/CMS_COND_<abX>_ALIGNMENT

Constants for Monte Carlo

A tag should have unlimited IOV, i.e. from run 1 to infinity. If that is not the case, please state explicitely.

The content of any tag for the GlobalPositionRcd can be investigated using the configuration file at CVS.

Tracker Monte Carlo Constants

A python script named create_scenarios.py has been used to create, validate and upload the database objects for the misalignment scenarios and ideal geometry. Please note that the script has to be run in a CMSSW environment after the cmsenv command. You also need the scenarios.ini configuration file. It still needs to be converted to use python configuration language.

Tracker Monte Carlo special misalignment scenario CMSSW_3_9_X or CMSSW_4_2_X

The following constants relative to special Tracker misalignment scenario+ weak modes from data are only stored in the preparation DB with connect string frontier://FrontierPrep/CMS_COND_ALIGNMENT.

The scenarios below are derived running the alignment algorithms on MC samples reconstructed with the IDEAL geometries but using as starting geometry for the alignment the geometry determined from the DATA. Therefore they contain relative misalignment of the components of the 'double sided' strip modules to each other. Note that some of the dof can be not misaligned in case they were not determined in the DATA (e.g. they have always been set to their IDEAL value). The geometries are centered around BPIX.

However: 31X reconstruction includes ME4/2, while 22X reconstruction does not. Therefore, CSCAlignmentRcds used in 31X must be specially-prepared, with the "310me42" substring in the tagname.
