Example to run the FastSimulation in the configuration as the Collision data

Changing the center of Mass energy

There are two ways of changing the center of mass energy in the FastSim:

  • picking the proper configuration file prepared by the generator group (suggested solution) that can be found in the directory Configuration/CMS.GenProduction/python
    • For example for 900GeV Minimum Bias:
cvs co Configuration/CMS.GenProduction/python/PythiaUESettings_cfi.py
cvs co Configuration/CMS.GenProduction/python/PYTHIA6_CMS.MinBias_900GeV_cff.py

    • For example for 2.36TeV Minimum Bias (in 334)
cvs co Configuration/CMS.GenProduction/python/PythiaUESettings_cfi.py
cvs co Configuration/CMS.GenProduction/python/PYTHIA6_CMS.MinBias_2360GeV_cff.py

  • Don't forget to complie the configs above:
cd Configuration/CMS.GenProduction
scramv1 b

  • By hand editing in the source code:
comEnergy = cms.untracked.double(900.)

at the same level of the pythiaHepMCVerbosity settings, i.e., outside the PythiaParameters PSet . Finally, the average number of pile-up events should be set to 0 !

Changing the CMS.GlobalTag

Depending on the release chosen the GlobalTags are different:

  • For CMSSW_3_3_X --conditions=MC_31X_V9::All (for the scenario with dead channel, but no misalignement/miscalibration and the 1^31 HLT menu) or STARTUP3X_V8E::All (for the misaligned/miscalibrated scenario and the 8^29 HLT Menu)
  • For CMSSW_3_4_X --conditions=MC_3XY_V14::All (for the scenario with dead channel, but no misalignement/miscalibration and 1^31 HLT Menu) or STARTUP3X_V14::All (for the misaligned/miscalibrated scenario and the 8^29 HLT Menu)

  • For simulation like the recent collision data new GlobalTags are available now that contain new bad channels, new reco beam spots. They are being considered for usage during the Xmas production: STARTUP3X_V8K for 33X and STATUP3X_V8L for 34X.

Changing the beam spot

Depending on the collisions configuration there are various beam spot options that can be chosen: to have the latest one you need to take the version V02-08-06 FastSimulation/Event

  • --beamspot=Early10TeVCollision (current)
  • --beamspot=Early900GeVCollision
  • --beamspot=Early2p2TeVCollision

Just as a piece of information the GlobalTag that is used in the data will include a beam spot with is even wider than the Early900GeVCollision. However is not considered relevant to try to simulate that in the MC.

Examples tested in CMSSW_3_3_5_patch1 which is used for the offline reco.
