Description of the HLT muon trigger logic

Every HLT muon path must be understood as a chain composed of two different types of pieces: pieces from the HLT muon reconstruction chain and pieces from the HLT filter logic.

The reconstruction chain is common to all trigger paths containing muons. This guarantees that only one instance of each reconstruction producer is used, independently of the number of muon trigger paths present in HLT. The savings in processing time are clear. Even if only a given subset of muon candidates may be relevant for a trigger path, the reconstruction chain will process all muon candidates (up to 4) selected by an initial filter common to all paths. This filter is applied on the Level-1 Global Muon Trigger information. Again, this is necessary to guarantee the use of the same collections (products) for all paths. It enormously simplifies the logic and facilitates the addition of new trigger paths, because a minimal additional time will be spent for them in what concerns muon reconstruction.

Some important details:

  • The HLT muon reconstruction chain starts only if the L1 trigger decision for at least one of the paths containing muons ( "SingleMuon", "DoubleMuon", "Muon+Jet", ...) is positive.
  • The reconstruction chain continues if at least one of the trigger paths with muons decides to do so. Conversely, it stops at a given point if all muon trigger paths decide that the subsequent reconstruction steps are not necessary. The usual case is a negative decision for all trigger paths if no muon pass some given thresholds in the initial steps.

In detail, the HLT muon reconstruction consists of the following steps:

  • The parameters of the Level-1 (L1) muon candidates are converted into seeds for the standalone muon reconstruction (also known as Level-2 muon reconstruction): RecoMuon/L2MuonSeedGenerator.
  • The Level-2 (L2) muon reconstruction itself: RecoMuon/L2MuonProducer.
  • Calorimetric isolation for Level-2 candidates, for trigger paths involving isolation: RecoMuon/L2MuonIsolationProducer.
  • The global muon reconstruction (also known as Level-3 muon reconstruction), using as seeds the Level-2 muon candidates. Regional reconstruction in the CMS tracker is an important ingredient: RecoMuon/L3MuonProducer.
  • Tracker isolation for Level-3 (L3) candidates, for trigger paths involving isolation: RecoMuon/L3MuonIsolationProducer.

Several trigger filters can be interleaved between the previous pieces of reconstruction code. These filters are specific for each trigger path. Their role is to stop the trigger sequence if muon candidates do not satisfy some given conditions provided via configuration files. In addition, they provide as output a reduced list of candidates that should be considered in subsequent filter steps. For instance the single muon trigger path with isolation sequence proceeds in the following way:

  • Level-1 filter: it filters L1 candidates according to their quality, Pt, ... The generic filter is: HLTrigger/Muon/src/HLTMuonL1Filter.cc.
  • L1 seeds for L2, plus L2 reconstruction (common reconstruction sequence: only if not done yet by a previous path).
  • Filter on L2 output (mainly Pt thresholds). The generic filter is: HLTrigger/Muon/src/HLTMuonPreFilter.cc.
  • Calorimetric isolation (common reconstruction sequence: only if not done yet by a previous path).
  • L2 isolation filter, requiring at least one isolated muon from the list of candidates selected by the previous filter: The generic filter is: HLTrigger/Muon/src/HLTMuonIsoFilter.cc.
  • L3 reconstruction (common reconstruction sequence: only if not done yet by a previous path).
  • Filter on L3 output (mainly Pt thresholds and impact parameter cuts).
  • Track isolation (common reconstruction sequence: only if not done yet by a previous path).
  • L3 isolation filter, requiring at least one isolated muon from the list of candidates selected by the previous filter. The event is considered as accepted by this trigger path if it passes the criteria of this last filter.

Trigger Configuration

The configuration files for offline reconstruction are placed in a CVS repository. It makes it simple to trace back what configuration was used for a certain Monte Carlo production or data reprocessing, but it has the drawback that a new release must be created for any configuration change. The online configuration has to be more flexible than that because online conditions will require fast modification of the HLT configuration (e.g. changes of thresholds or prescales, removal of faulty algorithms, ...) Furthermore, for offline reconstruction, the changes to low levels of reconstruction (e.g. local reconstruction) are automatically propagated by configuration dependencies to the higher level of reconstruction (e.g. track reconstruction). The configuration of the trigger has to be as stable as possible and as few modifications to offline reconstruction (at any level) as possible should affect the behavior of the trigger. Therefore, the HLT configuration is stored in a separate repository with interface to online databases, confDB (for "configuration data base"). Each online configuration is labelled with a unique HLT Key.

The confDB has two main user interfaces:

For Monte Carlo production, the HLT global configuration maintained in confDB is copied into the CVS repository to enter the frozen configuration of a CMS software release.

Known issues about the code in different versions

  • Track matcher between the standalone muon tracks at Level-2 and the tracker tracks at Level-3 had low efficiency at low pt in crowded environments such as TTbar, etc. The problem is solved in CMSSW_1_6_11, and starting with CMSSW_1_8_3 but NOT in CMSSW_1_7_X.
  • BeamSpot position used was (0, 0). The problem is solved in CMSSW_1_8_0 and later releases: the beamspot position from the DB is used and the cut on the distance from the BeamSpot is relaxed from 0.02 to 2 cm.

Module Timing

Common tools for trigger timing are available at SWGuideHLTTimingSummary.

The following set of instructions is applicable in 1_6_X and earlier CMSSW versions.

  • include "HLTrigger/Timer/data/timer.cfi" in your cfg file to get the time per module (default is CPU time).
  • to change to wall clock time just change useCPUtime=false in "HLTrigger/Timer/data/timer.cfi".
  • run module mytimer in the endpath (and keep its output).
  • use analyzeTiming from HLTrigger/Timer/test to get a HLT_timing.root file, see SWGuideTimeProfileTools.
  • you can copy ~muriel/public/timing/AnalyzeTiming.h if you want the sum of the different modules that go into L1, L2, L3.
  • you can also use the macro ~muriel/public/timing/Mac.C to get the jpg files corresponding to all the plots.

Path Timing

  • include the following lines into your configuration file:
      module pts = PathTimerInserter{}
      service = PathTimerService{}
  • run the module pts in you endpath and keep its output.
  • use hltTimngSummary located in DataFormats/HLTReco/test to get the plots.

Usage of muon-enriched and background samples, for the estimate of HLT rates

In principle the only difference between the muon-enriched samples and other samples is that they are weighted.
An example can be found GeneratorInterface/MuEnrichInterface/test/MuAnalyzer.cc. Also have a look at MBInclusiveMuonSample twiki page for details about the samples produced.

Usage of the muon HLT Tree Utility for trigger studies

A simple ntuple containing the major information about the muon trigger and also matching to generator level quantities has been developed and is documented in details at SWGuideMuonHLTTree.

Usage of OpenHLT for muon triggers

The OpenHLT (OH) tree is similar to the utility mentioned above, however, it has less information of muon triggers and more general information for trigger rate estimations.

Global Run Menus

For the MWGR configuration, a mix of the 8E29 and commissionning paths is made. There are not only difference in the filtering, but also in the reconstruction modules.
  • OIstateTk: means that the L3 seeding is made from the outside-in, giving much more efficiency in the cosmic muon topology.
  • NoVertex: means that the L2 track parameters are not updated to the beam spot, again giving much more efficiciency in the cosmic muon topology.
