Muon Local Reconstruction Offline Guide

Complete: 2

There are three muon subdetectors: the Drift Tubes (DT), the Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC) and the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC). The DT's are used in the barrel region, the CSC's in the end caps, and the RPC's are found in both regions. For more information about the hardware, see the Muon Technical Design Report tWiki page.

These technologies were developed by independent groups, so currently (2007) there are three Detector Performance Groups (DPG's) for the muon systems. You can find more information about these groups from the corresponding tWiki pages: DT-DPG, CSC-DPG and RPC-DPG.

The DPG's are responsible for the reconstruction of muons up to the level of segments in individual chambers - the so-called local reconstruction. The Muon Physics Object Group (POG) is responsible for linking segments together to form stand-alone muons and then linking those to silicon tracker tracks to form global muons.

This software guide therefore addresses only the codes needed for local reconstruction.

Algorithms and Software Architecture

The basic reconstruction path is as follows. Raw data is unpacked by the unpacker routines which create digi's, which are an organized arrangement of digital data at the per-channel level. These digis are then combined to form recHits which give the local X and Y coordinates and related information. These recHits are then associated into groups by some pattern recognition algorithm to form segments which give the straight-line parameters for a candidate muon producing those hits. The digi's, recHits and segments are similar but not identical for the DT's, CSC's and RPC's.
