How to run the TauAnalysis software for the Z --> e + mu channel

In the PAT v2 workflow, the analysis of the Z --> e + mu channel proceeds in three steps:

  • submission of analysis jobs for histogram filling and computation of FilterStatisticsTables
  • submission of "harvesting" jobs that sum the histograms and FilterStatisticsTables contained in different .root files
  • execution on lxplus of a draw job that displays the summed histograms and prints-out the summed FilterStatisticsTables

The .root files containing the histograms and FilterStatisticsTables will be copied to castor. For this reason, you need to replace the parameters

  • outputDirectory: in TauAnalysis/Configuration/test/ and TauAnalysis/Configuration/test/
  • plotDirectoryName: in TauAnalysis/Configuration/python/
before starting with the submission of batch jobs.

In order to submit the analysis jobs for histogram filling and computation of FilterStatisticsTables, please execute:

cd TauAnalysis/Configuration/test

The jobs will take a few hours to run.

You can check the status of the jobs by executing

bjobs -w

For further batch commands, please see .

Once the bjobs command does not list any pending or running analysis jobs anymore, you can proceed with the second step, the submission of DQM harvesting jobs. Please execute:


Once started, the harvesting jobs should take no more than about 15 minutes of processing time.

After all harvesting jobs have finished, you can proceed with the third and final step, the draw job that displays the summed histograms and prints-out the summed FilterStatisticsTables. Please execute:

rm makeZtoMuTauPlots.out ; cmsRun >& makeZtoMuTauPlots.out

After about 15 minutes, you will find plots of the summed histograms as PNG graphics files in the directoryin TauAnalysis/Configuration/test/plots . You can view the graphics files e.g. with gimp by executing:

gimp ./plots/plotZtoElecMu_finalSamplePlots_mVisible.png
which should give you the following plot (made with the TauAnalysis tag globalV00-00-04):

visible invariant mass of e + mu

You can find the print-out the summed FilterStatisticsTables in TauAnalysis/Configuration/test/makeZtoElecMuPlots.out .

Note that per default, factorization of the electron isolation efficiency is used for the InclusivePPmuX and PPmuXptGt20 QCD Monte Carlo samples is used, in order to increase the effective event statistics (factorization means that only loose isolation criteria are applied during the event selection and that instead, the events are scaled by the ratio = (number of events passing tight electron isolation)/(number of events passing loose isolation).

In order to disable factorization of the electron isolation efficiency for the InclusivePPmuX and PPmuXptGt20 QCD Monte Carlo samples, change:

replacements = "maxEvents = -1; applyFactorization = true"
replacements = "maxEvents = -1; applyFactorization = false"
for all QCD/pp --> mu + X jobs defined in TauAnalysis/Configuration/test/ and remove the two lines:
from TauAnalysis.Configuration.factorizationTools import enableFactorization_makeZtoElecMuPlots
in TauAnalysis/Configuration/test/ .

Note that at the moment, the Z --> e + mu analysis depends upon electron and muon isolations computed for larger, non-standard, isolation cones. As a consequence, the configuration file includes the reconstruction of PAT objects for these enlarged isolation cones.
