Current status

At the moment, there is a Analyser class, MCAccessTestV.cc in TrackingAnalysis/test. An earlier version of this code had been in a producer, but at some point Eric's software setup broke and the producer could no longer be run. Since the analyzer and producer are very similar, it will be easy to shift back and forth.

Getting HepMC information

Previously we were using code like

event.getByType(hepMC);

to get access to the HepMC data from an event. However, this doesn't work once vertex smearing is enabled as there are two HepMC stuctures in the EDM at that point. So, we have to use code like this:

event.getByLabel("VtxSmeared",hepMC);

instead. This label can be specified in the .cfg file and a ordered list of sources can be searched; the producer will use the first one in the list found. For some reason, in Eric's current setup, using a label of "PythiaSource" or even the getByType causes an assertion failure.

The analysis code in TrackingAnalysis/test/MCAccessTestV.cc illustrates some of these methods and these comments are based on simulations of minimum bias events.

Tracks

The only tracks that have end_vertex defined in HepMC are the internal tracks that are not put into EmbdSimTrack. For the tracks in EmbdSimTrack they only say which vertex they came from. There are, of course, additional EmbdSimTracks which are presumambly generated by matter interactions. Eric doesn't know yet what happens with weak decays.

Vertices

For the most part, only one track comes from any one EmbdSimVertex. The exception to this that Eric has seen is pair conversion from GEANT. EmbdSimVertices are don't contain a pointer to which HepMC vertex they come from. Furthermore EmbdSimVertex only tells us which track produced the vertex, not which track(s) comes from that vertex. It seems that the best way to determine the correspondance between the lists of EmbdSimVertex and HepMC::GenVertex is to loop over all the tracks and get the start vertex in each of the two schemes.

Then there are a bunch of HepMC vertices from the production vertex which produce EmbdSimVertices, but many of these EmbdSimVertices do not have production particles associated with them. Presumably these are the "edge" vertices which give rise to the real particles in the event.

I think we need vectors for each TrackingVertex which correspond to which HepMC vertices and EmbdSimVertices are associated with that vertex. Eric has implemented a config parameter for the radius to collapse vertices. We would put a default setting of this in our .cfi. Multiple vertices (HepMC and EmbdSimVertex) within this radius would all be considered to come from the same TrackingVertex.

Data Dump

This is a data dump most of the info that is available for tracks and vertices from HepMC and EmbdSimVertex.

The first table shows the vertices. The first column is the EmbdSimVertex number, the second is the EmbdSimParticle parent (-1 if none). I/O says if the vertex is in or out of the tracker volume. PHM is the parent particle index from HepMC (-1 if not determined (need to have a EmbdSimTrack to determine this)). HPV is the corresponding HepMC::GenVertex barcode (0 if none). CA is the distance in microns to the closest TrackingVertex already defined. CI is the closest TrackingVertex, or if followed by "+" means a new TrackingVertex was created with that number. P is the position of the vertex in mm.

In this example, although there are 103 EmbdSimVertices and 84 (not shown) HepMC vertices, there are only 17 vertices separated by 3 microns or more. 4 of these are outside the tracking volume.

The second table below shows a similar dump for EmbdSimParticle. First is the index, second the vertex of origin, third the HepMC particle barcode, fourth the PDG particle code, and finally the HepMC origin vertex.
