Visualization Grid Tutorial

Complete: 5

Basic Concepts

The 2D grid planes help in determining measurements and absolute positions of the objects displayed in Iguana. A grid plane is defined as a rectangle with marking lines. Its origin is defined in the top left corner. The default distance between the lines (spacing) is 1 m and can be changed interactively. Its width and height can also be changed interactively.

This is a new feature and has not been included in the existing releases yet. To test it with CMSSW_1_6_8 the following packages should be checked out and built in the local area:

  • VisFramework/VisFrameworkBase V02-11-01
  • Iguana/GLBrowsers V01-05-00
  • Iguana/GLModels V01-06-00
  • Iguana/Inventor V01-07-00

Grid Controls

To display a default grid plane, click on a Grid icon GUI on the Tool Bar.

To manipulate the grid plane or add more grid planes use Control Centre->Grid Planes.

Adding new Grid Planes and removing them

To add a new Grid Plane with a custom name, go into Control Centre->Grid Planes and click on the '+' in the upper right corner and enter the name you prefer. There is already a default Grid Plane named Full Grid Plane which is fully usable. To remove an existing Grid Plane, select the according plane in the drop down menu and click on the 'x' button in the upper right corner. If you happen to have removed all Grid Planes, the Control Centre becomes grey. To use the Grid Planes GUI again simply add a new plane as described above.

Selecting Grid Planes and activating or deactivating them

To be able to manipulate a Grid Plane, select one in the drop down menu. To activate or deactivate the selected Grid Plane check the checkbox named Active. If you press the Grid icon GUI in the tool bar all Grid Planes in the drop down list are activated or deactivated.

Adjust the position of the Grid Plane

In order to adjust the position of a selected Grid Plane you can use the three thumb wheels to rotate the Grid around the x-, y- or z-axis. Use the three align buttons to align the grid with xy-, yz- or xz-plane. GUI

The Distance slider can be used to change the grid's distance from the plane which is acutally rotated. Accordingly the Origin X and Origin Z sliders are usable to shift the Grid on that plane in x or z direction. The slider's displayed distance corresponds to the distance of the Grid's lower left corner, where the label '0m' is visible, from the point of origin.

Adjust the Grid's size and spacing

By using the sliders named Width and Height you can control the size of the grid. You can, for example, make it cover your whole piece you want to measure or you can just use it as some kind of ruler. At the three corners of the grid, the lengths of each direction along these edges are displayed in meters. If you want to have another spacing unit than one meter you can change the Grid's spacing by moving the Spacing slider. The Grid's size might not always have the exact size you provided in the corresponding slider, instead a size close to it will be shown according to the spacing that has been chosen in order to have a complete grid. If you are measuring from one end to the other observe the rendered distance rather than the one in the slider field.

Change the grid color

Each Grid's color is changable by selecting a Grid and manipulating the three color sliders.

Save and Load a Grid Configuration

If you have built a Grid configuration which you want to retain for another measurement, you can simply use the Save Grids button to save their positions, sizes, spacings, etc.

To load a Grid configuration click the Load Grids button and choose your file to completely take over the configuration in that file. Be aware that currently displayed Grids and their configurations will be overwritten and lost.
