9.7 Analysing Commissioning Ecal Data

Complete: 4
Detailed Review status

Goals of this page:

Instructions on this page should get you started analyzing ECAL commissioning data. You will learn:
  • Setting up CMSSW enviroment
  • Proper packages to use
  • Where to find the data
  • How to read the data
  • An Example Analysis

Set up your Environment

Start with a clean CMSSW release.

scramv1 project CMSSW CMSSW_2_0_5

Then get to the source directory

cd CMSSW_2_0_5/src
eval `scramv1 runtime -(c)sh`
project CMSSW

Packages to Check Out

A new package is required to create clusters in ECAL:
  • EcalCosmicBasicClusterProducer and EcalCosmicBasicClusterAlgo
cvs co -r V00-05-26-04 RecoEcal/EgammaClusterAlgos
cvs co -r V00-05-26-02 RecoEcal/EgammaClusterProducers
* One also needs to check out the example analysis code
cvs co -r V00-00-01-01 -d EcalCosmicAnalyzer UserCode/CCEcal/EcalCosmicAnalyzer
* Build the code
scramv1 b
cd EcalCosmicAnalyzer/EcalCosmicAnalyzer/test

How to Find the Data

For the purpose of this tutorial, we have a specific datafile that can be used. It is in the default cfg, but if you are not running on the CAF you can get it below.

cp /afs/cern.ch/user/c/ccecal/public/clusters.root .
rfcp /castor/cern.ch/user/c/ccecal/Tutorial/DC31EBF1-A5EF-DC11-B949-000423D9880C.root .

Or, one can run the job from that location on castor. OR from one of the official locations.

Example Analysis

  • EcalCosmicBasicClusterAnalyzer
  • EcalCosmicFromRecHits

If you want to create a clusters.root file, you can start with raw data and do all the steps in EcalTutorialtest.cfg

cd EcalCosmicAnalyzer/EcalCosmicAnalyzer/test
cmsRun EcalTutorialtest.cfg

This output the clusters.root file for a subset of a run. You can then perform an analysis over the Ecal cosmic clusters. As long as you have a clusters.root file in the current working directory.

cmsRun ecalcosmicanalyzer.cfg
root -l EcalClusterHists.root
Within root you can
TBrowser B
then double click on the plots. See ones like those below!
