D4Science Production Infrastructure - Operational Framework

The objective of the D4Science Service Activity (SA) is to make available and maintain a stable infrastructure for the production activities of the project three user communities: ESA, FAO and WorldFish Centre. This production infrastructure must be a well supported infrastructure, running stable, tested and reliable software.

The infrastructure is built on the results of the DILIGENT and EGEE-II projects. It allows the creation of Virtual Research Environments (VREs) for the Environmental Monitoring and Fishery Resource Management scientific disciplines.


The operation of the D4Science production infrastructure is based on five different areas of work:

  • Software Installation and Upgrade
  • Certification
  • User and Operational Support
  • Security
  • Monitoring and QoS

These areas of work are orthogonal to the organisation, procedures, and tools defined for the operation of the infrastructure. These topics are described in detail in different sections. One final section describes the infrastructure deployment plan with respect to resources and deadlines:

  3. Deployment Plan

To allow a successful and efficient deployment and maintenance of the D4Science production infrastructure a number of guidelines are defined. These guidelines are common to the five areas of work described above:
  • Document and monitor the organisational structure, procedures and tools established for the production infrastructure;
  • Implement a progressive deployment approach where experienced sites provide their sites earlier, giving more time for the less experienced site to learn about the D4Science technology;
  • Provide the necessary mechanisms for the exchange of information between sites to share experiences and learn with each other;
  • Promote a close collaboration with EGEE by:
    • Following the EGEE procedures and use its tools for the deployment of gLite components;
    • Profiting from the EGEE experience to establish the operation rules for gCube services.
