D4Science Production Infrastructure

The objective of the D4Science Service Activity (SA) is to make available and maintain a stable production infrastructure, i.e. a set of hardware and software resources deployed to provide D4Science user communities with a high-quality reliable service. This production infrastructure must be a well supported infrastructure, running stable, tested and reliable software.

The D4Science production infrastucture will suppor the activities of 3 user communities, representing 2 scientific domains:

Environmental Monitoring:

  • Representing Partner - European Space Agency (ESA);
  • Community - Researchers and stake-holders operating over a widespread geographic scale to provide political and technological solutions to global environmental issues (e.g., marine environment, forest ecosystem, air quality);
  • Requirements - Secure VREs where access to huge amount of information, both products or different kinds of reports, added-value applications and services, definition of workflows and on-demand processing of data are all seamless tasks.

Fishery Resource Management:

  • Representing Partners - FAO Fishery Department and WorldFish Center;
  • Community - Worldwide spread researchers and decision-makers from many disciplines (biologists, climatologists, GIS experts, socio-economists, fishery managers, etc.) operating to facilitate and secure the long term sustainable development and utilization of the world’s fisheries and aquaculture;
  • Requirements - VREs, encompassing many resources on aquatic biodiversity and socio-economics, offering to the communities tools for collaboration on shared fishery assessments in a continual way, instead of sporadically as at present.

Further information about the D4Science user communities can be found in the project web site.

The infrastructure is built on the results of the DILIGENT and EGEE projects. It allows the creation of Virtual Research Environments (VREs) for the Environmental Monitoring and Fishery Resource Management scientific disciplines.

The operation of the D4Science production infrastructure is based on five different areas of work:

  • Software Installation and Upgrade:
    • Deals with the installation and upgrade of the software running in the infrastructure.
  • Site Certification:
    • Deals with the certification process that sites have to go through to be classified as part of the infrastructure.
  • User and Operational Support:
    • Deals with the aspects of providing support to the infrastructure endusers and infrastructure site administrators.
  • Site Security:
    • Deals with the definition of the security model of the infrastructure.
  • Monitoring:
    • Deals with the tools utilised to monitor the status of the infrastructure.

These five areas of work are orthogonal to different aspects related to the operation of the infrastructure. These pages will focus on the description of the organisational structure of the infrastructure and the definition of procedures and tools to deploy and maintain it. The five areas of work are present in the description of these two aspects. Finally, these pages also describe the infrastructure deployment plan with respect to resources and deadlines.

These different topics are described in three different sections, each of then presented in one different web page:

  1. Organisational Structure
  2. Procedures and Tools
  3. Deployment Plan

The target audience of these pages is the teams involved in the deployment and maintenance of the D4Science production infrastructure. The organisational structure and deployment plan sections are useful for site responsibles that can use these pages to understand the infrastructure organisation and plans. One the other hand, section procedures and tools is dedicated to site administrators (referred in these pages as site managers) where they can find all information about how to deploy and maintain their sites.
