Production Infrastructure Organisation

This section describes the organisational structure of the production infrastructure.

The production infrastructure is organised in 3 layers:

Each organizational layer is responsible for a different set of activities. As highlighted in the description of each layer, the responsibilities of each centre follow the five areas of work defined for the production infrastructure (Software Installation and Upgrade, Certification, User and Operational Support, Security, Monitoring and QoS).

Management Centre
The management centre (coordinator) is responsible for the management and the operation of the production infrastructure.

The main tasks of the management centre are:

  • Plan the gCube and gLite software installation and upgrades
  • Define rules for site certification and site security
  • Define the user and operation support procedures
  • Select and implement the appropriate tools for infrastructure monitoring
  • Verify the correct execution of the EGEE procedures

CERN is the infrastructure management centre.

Resource Centre
The resource centre (site) is responsible for the deployment and operation of the different nodes of the production infrastructure.

The main tasks of the resource centre are:

  • Install and upgrade gCube and gLite components
  • Follow the site certification and site security rules

Each resource centre is composed by various nodes belonging to the same administrative domain. These nodes can be organised in 3 different categories:

  • gLite nodes
  • gCube nodes
  • community nodes

gLite Node

gLite nodes are computing and storage nodes running gLite software. gLite is the middleware provider by the EGEE project. By running gLite, these machines provide core grid functionalities such as file-based storage, distributed computation of applications, etc.. These nodes, are exploited by gCube services which then provide higher level functionality through the D4Science VREs.

gLite nodes are expected to be part of the EGEE production infrastructure. The EGEE infrastructure is one of the largest grid infrastructures of the world providing more than 240 sites. By joining such infrastructure, D4Science extends the its infrastructure and gets access to a vast number of resources distributed world-wide.

gCube Node

gCube nodes are hosting nodes available to run gCube services. gCube is the software initially developed by the DILIGENT project now being extended by D4Science. The gCube software is composed by a special web service container, called gCube Hosting Node (gHN) and a set of WSRF specific services and libraries that provide the means to create, manage and exploit Virtual Research Environments (VREs).

A gCube node is a machine that runs the gCube Hosting Node (gHN) and is therefore prepared to host any gCube Service.

Community Node

Community nodes are special nodes providing content and services specific to one user community. Content and data which cannot be imported into gCube or gLite nodes is made available through these nodes via personalised or standardised interfaces. Even if they are specific to each user community they are seen as part of the D4Science Production Infrastructure.

The following picture represents a possible distribution of gLite, gCube and community nodes through different sites.


There are 6 resources centres defined in the D4Science production infrastructure. Each resource centre must be represented by at least one site manager.

Support Centre
The support centre is responsible for providing support to both users and resource centres.

The main tasks of the support centre are:

  • Provide user support to the D4Science user communities on gCube usage problems
  • Provide operational support to the infrastructure resource centres on problems related to the deployment of gCube nodes

Each support centre must define a support contact. Support contact names and more details about the support activity will be defined in deliverable DSA1.2 "Deployment and support procedures".
