Creating New Virtual Organizations
The EGEE project has worked to make setting up a new Virtual Organization (VO) as lightweight as possible but this procedure still requires a significant investment of time by those wanting to setup a new VO and by the project to ensure that all of the necessary documentation (Acceptable Use Policy, descriptions, links to web pages, etc.) is present. Consequently, the project recommends that existing VOs be used in preference to creating a new VO when possible. If an existing VO will not meet the goals of the users (for example data security constraits require data isolation), then the project will help setting up a new VO.
Creating a New VO
- Check whether an existing VO will meet your needs. The full list of registered VOs
can be found on the CIC Portal. If an existing VO meets your needs, request to join that VO rather than start a new one.
- Review the documents (listed below) related to starting and running a VO.
- Identify a person (possibly you) who will act as the VO Manager. This person will approve requests from people wanting to join the VO.
- Ensure that the person who will be the VO Manager has a valid personal grid certificate.
- Using his or her personal certificate, the VO Manager should register
the new VO via the CIC Portal. This process will require a description of the VO, an Acceptable Use Policy, and a DNS-style name for the VO. You may request the necessary VOMS server during the registration.
- Make a request for initial resources.
- Test that VO services work correctly.
- Allow other people to join the VO and enjoy using the grid.

These contacts are likely to come through the VO Support and Application Support teams. Those teams will be made aware of this policy through the NA4 Steering Committee and transmit this information as needed.
