LCG priorities for gLite

Introduction

This twiki reflects the LCG priorities for gLite during the transition period until EMI is able to take care of the release management of EMI releases. This twiki is presented in the Tier 1 Coordination meetings by Maria Alandes.

News

  • End of Standard Support for gLite 3.1 and 3.2 services on 31.10.2011.
    • The following services will only have security updates support until April 2012:
      • gLite 3.2: glite-APEL, glite-ARGUS, glite-BDII_site, glite-BDII_top, glite-CLUSTER, glite-CREAM, glite-GLEXEC_wn, glite-LB, glite-LSF_utils, glite-MPI_utils, glite-SCAS, glite-SE_dcache_info, glite-SE_dcache_nameserver_chimera, glite-SE_dcache_pool, glite-SE_dcache_srm, glite-SGE_utils, glite-TORQUE_client, glite-TORQUE_server, glite-TORQUE_utils, glite-UI, glite-VOBOX, glite-VOMS_mysql, glite-VOMS_oracle, glite-WN.
      • glite 3.1: glite-CLUSTER, glite-LSF_utils, glite-SGE_utils, glite-TORQUE_utils, glite-WMS and lcg-CE.
    • User support is still provided for all services. Note that in any case, for some problems, the only solution may be to update to EMI, since no more standard updates are scheduled.
    • Note that this does not affect Data Management services. LFC, DPM and FTS will be still released in gLite 3.2 until April 2012.
    • The grid middleware in the Applications Area will be also updated if there are new versions of gLite 3.2 Data Management clients until April 2012.
    • There won't be more updates of gLite middleware at the T1SC meeting. On the other hand, Data Management will attend the meeting to inform about Data Management updates.

      • Next certificate for voms.hellasgrid.gr and voms2.hellasgrid.gr.
      • It removes old certificate for voms.fnal.gov.
    • FTS 2.2.7, DPM/LFC 1.8.2-2 and GFAL/lcg_utils 1.11.16-3 are about to be certified.
    • New version of TORQUE will be released in gLite 3.2 since the current version has a security issue. See EGI advisory. See PATCH:5059, PATCH:5060 and PATCH:5061.

  • No production or staged rollout releases since the beginning of July.
  • Remember that the end of standard updates for gLite 3.2 + 3.1 WMS + 3.1 lcg-CE is 31.10.2011 (except DPM, LFC and FTS until 30.04.2011). For more details check the gLite support calendar.
  • gLite 3.2 releases can be now tracked under http://tinyurl.com/gLitePatches.
    • A patch for lcmaps is ready to fix job submission problems detected with Terena user certificates. This was reported in GGUS:67040. A new CREAM patch will be prepared to integrate this fix (expected at the end of September, is this a reasonable deadline?)
    • A new version of DPM/LFC 1.8.2-1 is under preparation.
      • filesystem selection based on assigned weights
      • much faster dpm-drain
      • more flexible thread number definition for each of the daemons
    • A new version of GFAL/lcg_utils 1.11.19 is under preparation. This will be integrated in a UI/WN/VOBOX release by mid September.
  • ARGUS developers only have man power to support the EMI version. Unless there is a specific need for maintaining it in gLite 3.2, is it OK to officially stop the support in gLite 3.2 from the WLCG perspective?

Production

  • gLite Releases pages always available in www.glite.org.
  • New version of lcg-vomscerts 6.5.0 was released on 02.08.2011. It affects only gLite 3.1, in particular FTS and WMS. See PATCH:4983 and PATCH:4984:
    • adds next cert for voms.fnal.gov and
    • removes old certs of voms.cern.ch and voms-pilot.cern.ch

  • EMI-1 release was announced on 19.05.2011. The release notes are available here.
  • Reminder on gLite 3.2 support:
    • gLite 3.2 will be under Standard Support until October 2011.
    • Standard support means bug fixes and minor functionality of a certain priority. This will be analysed on a case by case basis. The official channel to ask for a bug fix/minor feature in gLite 3.2 is GGUS. Awareness on important GGUS tickets can be raised at the WLCG Tier 1 SC meeting and GDB or by contacting gd-release-team@cernNOSPAMPLEASE.ch.
    • Note that services that are not in glite 3.2 by now don't fall under this definition (i.e. WMS).
    • Security Updates will be supported only until April 2012 (date for EMI-2 release). This means security updates fixing vulnerabilities whose target date falls within that date, according to the SVG assessment: https://wiki.egi.eu/wiki/SVG:SVG
  • Check the gLite support calendar to be up to date on retirement dates.
  • Find the updated list of scheduled releases in the Savannah task tracker: EGEE JRA1 workplan: This tracker is now empty. No releases are foreseen.

    • The workarounds for these issues are documented in the WN Known issues page.

  • New 3.1 DPM and LFC 1.8.0 release requested by EGI. It fixes some memory leaks in VOMS. Even if standard updates are now over, EGI considers this fix is useful since there are many sites still using 3.1 DPM and LFC.
  • New 3.1 WMS patch fixing a vulnerability issue to be released next week.

  • Find the updated list of scheduled releases in the Savannah task tracker: EGEE JRA1 workplan.
  • A retirement calendar for gLite 3.2 is being prepared with specific details. In the meantime, be aware that gLite is fully supported until EMI-1 is released by April 29th. Fully supported means bug fixes and minor functionality of a certain priority. Services that are not in glite 3.2 by now don't fall under this definition (i.e. WMS, CONDOR_utils and PX). In particular:
    • CREAM 1.6.x from glite 3.2 will be the version to be used until there are reasons to upgrade to newer versions of CREAM from EMI.
    • WMS will not be backported into gLite 3.2. WMS will be taken from EMI.
  • glite-CLUSTER will be supported in EMI.

gLite 3.1 Support

  • EGI and gLite are collaborating to define a procedure to retire grid middleware. As far as the part related to development is concerned, the gLite collaboration would like to officially propose the following steps for services moving from gLite 3.1 to gLite 3.2 (Based on EGEE grid middleware retiring process):
    • When the gLite 3.2 version of a service has been in production and no significant problems have been seen for 1 calendar month, gLite proposes the gLite 3.1 version of the service to be made obsolete.
    • The gLite collaboration proposes a set of deadlines for each service that is a candidate to be made obsolete. The deadlines are:
      • The end of standard updates, this means no new feature and no bug fixes. Security updates will still be provided.
      • The end of security updates.
    • The proposal is presented in the Tier 1 Coordination meeting. From that moment, all interested parties will have 2 weeks to give feedback on the proposal. If there are objections, then the matter will be discussed at the GDB. If there are no objections, the agreed calendar will be broadcast to all NGIs and VOs and will be added to the gLite web pages containing all relevant information for migration from 3.1 to 3.2 per service basis.
    • In addition, a reminder will be broadcast and announced at the Tier 1 Coordination meeting 1 week before the due date.

  • Note that no deadline is proposed for end of official support of the service in Production (including both user support and operational support), since we consider this is an operational issue out of the scope of the gLite development.
  • Note that after gathering feedback from WLCG, the proposal will also be brought to EGI bodies for final recommendation.

  • gLite 3.1 support:
    • Feedback from WLCG on 3.1 support received. Please check the summary here.
    • Feedback from EGI is also needed to take a final decision. A survey is on going.
    • gLite 3.1 support to be discussed in the next GDB on 08.09.2010. gLite will propose to stop releasing updates in 3.1 as a general rule (of course, this is only applicable to services that exist in 3.2 for a while. See the list in WLCG feedback in the previous link). If requested, updates to 3.1 will be done for critical issues.
    • Release of 3.1 CREAM 1.6.2 under consideration. We are checking the impact of the bugs in the production infrastructure. Maybe too few 3.1 CREAM CEs available.
    • Release of SL5/32bits WMS clients to be integrated in the UI and VOBOX. Follow up on BUG:71873.
  • Release of new lcg-vomscerts 6.0.0 to gLite 3.1 on 19.08.2010.

  • As agreed on the GDB on 09.06.2010, a twiki page summarising the status of gLite 3.1 services in order to decide upon the support on gLite 3.1 has been produced. A decision will be made by WLCG on which gLite 3.1 services can stop being supported.
  • A new release of the lcg-CA 1.35 was announced on 21.06.2010. A quick fix release was done one week after to fix a problem with a Polish CA and was announced on 30.06.2010. Details can be found under lcg-CA 1.36.

LHC experiments have been asked to give feedback about:

  • short/medium term priorities for gLite services important to the experiment.
  • gLite services for which bug fixes are expected.
  • For those gLite services for which no new releases are expected, whether new releases prepared by the developers are welcome.

It's very important that problems are described in GGUS or Savannah so that they can be tracked
