EMI Data storage accounting kick-off meeting, Sept. 20, 2010, 11:00-11:40

Participants: Jon, Paul, Riccardo Z., Zsolt, Ralph

  • Presentation of people: Who does what where?
    • Jon Kerr Nilsen, Univ. of Oslo, is working with ARC data clients, has no storage element in EMI so will not implement SAR, but will work to make a implementable SAR definition
    • Paul Millar, DESY, dCache developer, has worked with GLUE2 standard and implementation, currently no accounting in dCache, closest thing is a storage cost module
    • Zsolt Molnar, works at CERN, works with FTS, gLite data libs, storage accounting is a new topic
    • Ralph Mueller-Pfefferkorn, Dresden, works with UNICORE, as ARC, UNICORE provides no SE, but storage accounting is an interesting topic
    • Riccardo Zappi, INFN, StoRM team leader, not so large team so works with management and development. Has an actual use-case where storage accounting is needed, as referees request more details about storage usage

Question from Paul to Riccardo: What is the referee asking about which cannot be provided by GLUE2?

  • Need more details about accounting, when data is accessed, etc. GLUE2 only provide snapshots.

  • What should we do?
    • Jon went briefly through the goals of the group:
      • Goal: define a storage accounting record before January
      • Must be possible to implement -> simple as possible, with extensions to satisfy later requirements (and preferably avoid charge)
    • Contact with OGF
      • Jon made contact with John Kennedy and Andrea Cristofori (Summary)
    • Need contact with user communities (OSG, ATLAS, CMS, ...)
      • We need to contact user communities and storage providers to get requirements as soon as possible
      • A brief brain-storming of who to contact, see actions below.
    • Security
      • We should contact John White (EMI security), David Groep (NIKHEF)
    • We should also look into how, e.g., Amazon S3 are doing their accounting
    • Wiki-page for collecting all the info: EMI Storage accounting wiki
  • Do we need a f2f meeting? When?
    • Postponed
  • Will we be able to finish the deliverable within December?
    • Postponed
  • Regular meetings
    • Jon suggested every second week. Will put up a doodle poll to find suitable time.

  • Collecting requirements:
    • Paul: Contacts ATLAS (Graeme Stewart), dCache community
    • Riccardo: Contacts INFN SP
    • Ralph: Contacts DEISA
    • Zsolt: Contacts CMS
    • Jon: Contacts OSG (Ted Hesselroth, also ask if they have some storage accounting already implemented), EMI security (John White), David Groep
  • Jon will put up a doodle poll to find suitable time for regular meetings
