The European Middleware Initiative is a close collaboration of four major middleware providers, ARC, gLite, dCache and UNICORE. It will deliver a consolidated set of middleware components for deployment in EGI, PRACE and other DCIs, extend the interoperability and integration between grids and other computing infrastructures, strengthen the reliability and manageability of the services and establish a sustainable model to support, harmonise and evolve the middleware, ensuring it responds effectively to the requirements of the scientific communities relying on it.

The growing availability and use of compute and data infrastructures now requires their transformation into a professionally managed and standardised service. It is of strategic importance for the establishment of permanent sustainable research infrastructures to lower the technological barriers still preventing resource owners and researchers from using grids as a commodity tool in their daily activities. The EMI project, together with EGI, will make the realisation of this vision possible.
