EMI supported platforms: EMI 1 will be released in April 2011. All EMI 1 components must be fully supported on the SL5/64 platform* with EPEL as repository for external components. Full platform support means the component is distributed from the EMI repository using certified source and binary packages according to the format specification of the platform. The component is built, tested, deployed on the testbed, certified, supported and maintained on that platform using the EMI infrastructure.
EMI 2 will be released in April 2012 and must be fully supported for all components on the SL5/64, SL6/64 and Debian/64 platforms. Work is already ongoing to add support for SL6/64 and Debian/64 to the EMI infrastructure. The specific Debian version or flavour to be used will be decided by the 16th of February. Once the infrastructure is upgraded to include support for the new platforms, components available on these platforms can be immediately released without waiting for the release of the EMI 2 distribution in April 2012.
It is acknowledged that there are a number of components which are already available on other platforms, like CentOS, SuSE or Windows. In such cases, EMI is unable to provide official support because the EMI infrastructure is not available for these platforms. These components can of course be released independently from EMI and can be advertised using EMI channels if desired, but cannot be made part of an officially supported EMI distribution.
* Platform, in this case, refers to a specific operating system version, e.g. a Linux distribution release, and a hardware architecture, e.g. i386 .
Merge of Virtualization and Cloud Task Force: PTB decided to merge the virtualization and cloud task forces due to their largely overlapping manpower and recent departure of virtualization task force leader.
