Dear all,

Before accepting this milestone, I'd like to clarify a number of points. The comments apply also to the "Training material" section of the corresponding Training Plan deliverable currently under review.

1) I'd like to discuss about the definition of training material and understand how this different from standard documentation. Documentation has to be provided by the Product Teams as part of their development and is certainly useful and necessary to deploy, operate and use the EMI middleware. However "training material" usually has a different goal and format than standard documentation. The current online training material page contains almost only documentation and a few links to external sites with actual training presentation or material

2) The current content is still organized in terms of the four middleware distributions in EMI, there is no EMI identity. We are very close to releasing EMI 1 and our training material (and documentation) should be targeted at promoting EMI

3) One of the major requests for EGI and the user communities is to start reasoning in terms of "capabilities" not middleware. The training should be organised in the same way: training about Execution services, security, inforation systems, data management, etc. Again, we should stop reasoning always in terms of ARC, dCache, gLite, UNICORE. This has also been recently an explicit request by EGI in the organization of the EMI training events at the EGI/EMI Conference and a request to reorganize the session in terms of capabilities has been discussed with the EMI NA2 WP leader

4) There is almost zero content produced by EMI. All links I looked at point either to material produced before EMI or not by EMI, like the direct link to the EGI training material. If I were the EGI training responsible person I would object to this. The links have no "metadata" associated, there is no way of knowing which software version the material refers to, who has done it, when it has been done. In some cases the material is even several years old, the link to the gLite GILDA training points to a page last revised on 30 Oct 2009 and still mentioning gLite 3.0 (deprecated years ago) and gLite 3.1 (almost completely deprecated) and no gLite 3.2!

5) Training is mainly for external users. Material for in-reach can certainly be provided in the internal twiki, but most of the material should be properly published on the official EMI web site and regularly maintained

In the current format and with the current content I do not consider the milestone achieved.

As a further suggestion, please consider that several EMI members have produced presentations about EMI topics at conferences and events including the last All Hands meeting. That body of EMI presentations can very well form the initial core of training material rather than user documentation linked from other sites.

Responses from author

1. The majority of the materials listed came from the responses to the requests for training materials and documentation which were sent to the product team leaders, thus this is assumed to be what is currently available. We have also added some links to external training resources where we have found appropriate materials.

The documentation however, provides a starting point for creation of training materials. While NA2 does not have enough resources dedicated to training to produce a comprehensive set of training materials, there are plans to produce some materials based on this gathered documentation and the training presentations given at in-reach and other EMI training events. These will be added in due course.

2. As we received mainly documentation from the product teams, we do not yet have enough training material available to make a comprehensive list of training materials by product, but these will be added gradually. In the meantime we have broken the training page out into two sections to facilitate the addition of per-product materials.

3. As with item 2, this transition will take time, but we are actively reviewing the materials available to see how each might fit into this capabilities approach.

4. We have added some more materials produced by EMI and we are now reviewing any presentations made by EMI to find those which would be suitable for inclusion in the training materials list. After the Technical Conference we will have a larger body of training materials to upload here too.

As an aside, I do not think this is unusual at this stage in the project, and projects such as EGI are in a similar position. More materials produced by EMI will be added as training events take place and material becomes available.

With regard to dates, the material on the GILDA portal, for example, is regularly updated, and the date on the page relates only to the main page which is not updated regularly. Deeper linking to individual resources provided by projects like GILDA may be required in order to provide accurate modification times, etc. however this would need to be agreed with the projects in question. We are investigating our options here and will try to add dates and other metadata in the near future.

5. I think we are in agreement here. The materials available are under ongoing review to ensure that the most relevant materials for external users are published to the public site. We have also removed the links back to the wiki pages from the public site to ensure that these are kept separate.
