Summer 2020 Cosmics

Below you can find a description and summary of the cosmics runs taking over the 2020 summer period in EHN1 using two Technion scintillator plates and a full tracker station.

Some notes on configurations:

  • Trigger Logic Board (TLB) Look-up Table: Trigger on coincidence of signals from scintillator plates only.
  • TLB simple deadtime: 500 clock ticks
  • TLB tracker delay setting: 100 clock ticks
  • Chip read out mode: HIT mode [XXX]
  • Tracker thresholds:
    • Used "TrimTarget": Optimised per-module threshold so that most strips trimmable.

Winter 2020 Cosmics

Below you can find a description and summary of the cosmics runs taking over the 2020 winter period in EHN1 with a full tracker station. The two Technion scintillator plates were used for the first period of data taking, whilst later we switched to two FASER scintillators for maximum trigger coverage.

Physical setup

The physical setup changed throughout winter: We started off with technion scintillators and later swapped to using FASER scintillators. Tracker planes were housed in tracker frame v3. No layers were flipped with respect to the others.

  • For Runs < 468: Same set up as for summer cosmics, but without flipped Layer 2.
  • For Runs 468+: Swapped out technion plates with FASER scintillators for full tracker plane coverage.
  • For Runs 600+: Switched to Station 3.
  • For Runs 641+: Added another FASER scintillator on top.

Configurations

Some notes on configurations:

In general, TBP2 (coincidence top & bottom scintillator) was active only. From Run 610 onwards, single triggers (TBP0/TBP1) were also activated to trigger on tracks with larger incidence angles.

TBP4 (random trigger) was active for the majority of runs, at various rates.

A summary of changes:

  • For Run 400+ (03/12/2020) we switched to a run service to log runs automatically: http://aagaard.web.cern.ch/aagaard/FASERRuns/runlist.html. All run information/configurations can be found here, save for the mapping of trigger lines. These are instead detailed in the previous section.
  • For Run 468+ (10/12/2020) we set up large FASER scintillators, to cover whole tracker plane surface area.
  • For Run 475+ (11/12/2020) we switched to TLB with ethernet! No more consistent stream of corrupted events due to USB2 limitations.
  • Run 600+ (18/12/2020) was start of CERN christmas shut down, switched to Station 3, and kept cosmics running, monitoring from remote.
  • Run 641+ (08/01/2021) added another FASER scintillator on top.

A summary of trigger line mapping changes (also see details under Configuration):

  • Runs 161 - 608:
    • TBP0: top scintillator (Prescale=0), TBP1: bottom scintillator (Prescale=0), TBP2: coincidence top & bottom (Prescale=1), + various rates for random trigger (TBP4)
  • Runs 610-611: triggering on top scint only
    • TBP0: top scintillator (Prescale=1), TBP1: bottom scintillator (Prescale=0), TBP2: coincidence (Prescale=1), + various rates for random trigger (TBP4)
  • Runs 613-614 triggering on single top & bottom:
    • TB0: top scintillator (Prescale=1), TBP1: bottom scintillator (Prescale=1), TBP2: coincidence (Prescale=1), + various rates for random trigger (TBP4)
  • Runs 641+ (after adding second scintillator on top):
    • TBP0: top scint 1 & top scint 2 (Prescale=1), TBP1: bottom scintillator (Prescale=10), TBP2: coincidence top scint 1 & bottom scint (Prescale=1), TBP3: coincidence top scint 2 & bottom scint (Prescale=1)+ various rates for random trigger (TBP4)

Our record run during the Christmas shut down was 608 (10 days), with around 1 million cosmic events.
