External radiation therapy with proton and heavy ion beams, also referred to as hadron therapy, represents today one of the more effective approaches against cancer. On the other hand, hadron therapy still appears as a pioneering technique that requires a lot of improvements and studies from both the theoretical (dosimetry, radiobiological models, etc) as well as from the experimental point of view. In this context, the importance and necessity of a well validated Monte Carlo is evident, as it could represent the more accurate approach for the calculation of dose distributions in hadron therapy.

In this page, we report on the ability of the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit in proton and ion therapy simulations. We present applications and results obtained from various Users and Developers.

A good starting point for exploring the Geant4 capabilities in the hadron therapy field, is the Hadrontherpy example, distributed with the Geant4 source code.
