Welcome to the LIU Ions upgrade info site

CERN's heavy ion chain has been upgraded, in order to help achieve higher luminosities in LHC and HL-LHC.

The programme is to reach the higher luminosity for ALICE in 2021, with Pb-Pb remaining on the LHC programme up to 2029.

The upgrade have already reached the required bunch intensities into the SPS at the end of 2016. The remaining essential element to increase the beam performance is to installed the slip-stacking mechanism into the SPS.

As of June 2021, the LIU project finished, with the upgrades being used and transferred to operational status.
