Observations on CERN Hyper-V

Results of running 3 runs of bonnie++ on the different fileststems is available at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6594808/HyperV-benchmark.pdf (Andrew has the original .odt version)

Work with Jan has showed that setting the hardware on the host machines to be raid0 gives an improvement over the normal raid1 setup. (given the constraint that losing a hypervisor isn't critical for the build service. Running 'production' services needs more reliable hardware of course smile

Repo Files

  • By default EPEL is enabled, so when installing middleware you'll need to do yum install --disablerepo epel --enablerep dag installl foo
This is probably a side effect of the default SLC image -- may not be present when we move to SL custom ones
  • autoupdate is enabled. This broke a cream installation (installed bdii 5.0.8 with install, nightly update picked up newer version in EPEL)
Therefore suggest disabling epel completely for now:

sudo sed -i 's/^enabled=1/enabled=0/' /etc/yum.repos.d/epel.repo

environment `hostname` only reports shortname, you'll need to do `hostname -f` if you want the full host.cern.ch (which is how it should be, our vnode machines are wrong)

aelwell@pcitgtelwell:~$ pdsh -w vtb-generic-10[1,3] hostname vtb-generic-101: vtb-generic-101.cern.ch vtb-generic-103: vtb-generic-103.cern.ch aelwell@pcitgtelwell:~$ pdsh -w vtb-generic-10[1,3] hostname -f vtb-generic-103: vtb-generic-103.cern.ch vtb-generic-101: vtb-generic-101.cern.ch
