WLCG Accounting Review motivation
The goal of the WLCG accounting review is to understand the needs of all WLCG stakeholders (VOs, sites, funding agencies, management) answering the following questions:
- What metrics do we collect?
- Do all stakeholders agree on the meaning of the collected metrics?
- Do we have all metrics we need?
- Are all of the collected metrics needed?
- Is information reliable?
- Is there a way to validate collected data?
- What is a primary information source for every metric and how values are provided/measured in the first place?
- How data is provided to the users (UIs, APIs)?
The review should cover both computing resources (CPU utilization) and storage (space accounting).
Among other questions we need to address, there are the following aspects/issues which have been identified and discussed in some of the WLCG task forces:
- accounting for opportunistic (non-pledged) resources (clouds, HPC...)
- accounting for multi-core and how we deal with dynamically allocated/partitioned resources
- do we use CPU time or wallclock time to compare with pledges
- WLCG requirements for the EGI accounting portal
- Installed capacity, available capacities and pledges. Agree on definitions and how these numbers are provided.
- Storage accounting currently mostly based on SRM. What do we do in the future in case we deal with srm-less disk storage? Should we already look for a srm-less solution?
This list is probably not complete and will be extended
Space accounting related input.
