NBL-Brookhaven Site Capacity Growth Plans 2007/2008

Last Updated 31.10.2007: with email of 19 October from Michael Ernst <mernst@bnl.gov>

Please find the preliminary plan for processing power and disk & tape storage upgrades until April 2008 below.

Note, this plan is not finally confirmed since there is no budget for FY 2008 yet that was approved by the U.S. Government. As in the previous years we are under “continuing resolution” and will only receive a fraction of the funding based on the FY 2007 budget.

The preliminary plan foresees the following procurements until April 2008

- Processing Power

o Installed is currently 2.4 MSI2k

o This will be upgraded to 4.9 MSI2k end of January

- Disk Storage

o Installed is currently 1,100 TB

o This will be upgraded to 2,000 TB end of January

- Tape Storage

o In anticipation of the ramp-up required in 2008 the robot system was upgraded this week

§ By 6000 cartridge slots (will be filled with LTO4/800GB cartridges)

§ By 10 LTO4 tape drives (total is now 10 LTO3 + 10 LTO4 drives for ATLAS)

§ The HPSS high-performance/reliable disk cache was upgraded to accommodate the LTO4 rates

o We are planning to buy 1000 LTO4 cartridges => 800 TB tape storage capacity
