FTS version 2.0 Oracle XE status

Oracle XE Support

FTS has been tested upon Oracle XE 10.2.0.1.

  • Documentation and user community support is available from the Oracle XE page.

Note that EGEE does not provide support for Oracle XE installation, debugging or operations.

Oracle XE Testing Level

From basic tests, we believe that FTS 2.0 running on Oracle XE can support up to:

  • 50 concurrent gridFTP transfers over 10 channels over 5 VOs.
  • Several thousand files transfered per day

This is based upon the following assumptions:

  • Oracle XE running on modern dual-core server-class machines with 2 GB memory. Not shared with the FTS agent software.
  • 2 FTS load-balanced web-services and agents over at least 2 servers of the same class.

with the following restrictions:

  • None of the summarization tools are available, since Oracle XEs licensing restrictions on the total DB volume and CPU usage do not allow these to run.
  • Short audit time in database - you rely upon the transfer logs to fulfill your legal audit requirements, and not the DB; the volume restrictions on Oracle XE dictate that finished transfers are flushed rather quickly.

A more detailed estimate (based on measurements of the CERN production service) is currently being planned.

Recommendation

It is not recommended to use Oracle XE for WLCG production - you should use Oracle Enterprise, ideally in one of its high availability configurations.
