ITUM: IT Technical Users Meeting

Scope

Topics: This meeting will address technical topics of interest to both IT Dept and the Users of its services. Potential topics can be sent to itum-wg@cernNOSPAMPLEASE.ch. The members of that e-group will advise the ITUM chair on agenda topics and their timimg. An initial list of potential topics is given below. A particular focus will be given to topics of relevance for the main LHC experiments. The meeting will address both immediate issues and trends (up to around 5 years).

Attendance: Attendance is expected to change according to the agenda topics of each meeting with a core membership attending all/most meetings. The core members from outside IT Department assure the relevant attendance and information flow with their communities. All IT Department Group Leaders will receive the meeting agendas and assure the relevant attendance for their Groups. The core members from IT Department will be the meeting chair, meeting secretary, and a member of the IT-DHO (Department Head's Office).

Frequency: It is expected to hold around 5 meetings per year (but frequency will be adapted to requirements).

Goals

The goals of ITUM are to :

  • provide technical input to decisions to be taken by the ITSRM (IT Service Review Meeting)
  • understanding the impact on users for the topics addressed by the meetings
  • document feedback on topics addressed by the meetings
  • exchange technical information between IT Department and its user communities
  • evaluate technical trends

Potential Topics

An initial list of potential topics is:

  • Help desk centralisation and RITS plans
  • Future plans for global file systems - AFS/Lustre/GPFS - what data volumes, performance and functionality.
  • Tape/disk futures and matching data management vision
  • User identity life cycle management plans (CRA to ILM2)
  • SLCx (and GCC) future versions timing/compatibility
  • Security of T0D1 data - will we backup all/some/leave to user ?
  • Analysis support for CAF/PROOF/ROOT users
  • Macintosh support - what/how
  • Windows futures
  • Virtualisation - what/how/when
  • Printing services
  • CERN search engine improvement program - experiments request better search facilities
  • Inter-experiment standardisation - what can be done
  • Future of PhyDB
  • MySQL support
  • Egroups plans
  • Elogger support - problem tracking support - gmail whiteboards
  • Out of hours support for experiments during data taking
  • Migration from CVS to SVN
  • Twiki future - scalability/functionality/performance
