Description

Top BDII since update 33 runs correctly only on high end machines while the previous version could run flawlessly in modest systems. Even on high end systems, it stresses them out a lot. Some of the reasons were uderstood and fixed with the BDII version 5.0 corresponding to PATCH:2874 and PATCH:2877

In order to verify the correct behaviour of the BDII 5.0 a pilot activity is promoted at various sites. The relevant patches are installed over at least one instance of all the affected services and let running in production for a definite time.

Use cases

Standard production use

Objective and metrics

Minimal functional objective (technically already matched before starting the pilot) is to verify that the new BDII provides a seamless solution of operational issues observed running the previous version as top-level BDII, namely those reported with

  • GGUS:43578 (top bdii problems with update 34) --> verified by user as being fixed by PATCH:2874
  • GGUS:43230 (gLite 3.1u34: lcg-cp failing on a BDII error in a MPI job ) and GGUS:42684 (gLite 3.1 Update 34 breaks Infosys ) --> solved by bdii-4.0.1-4.noarch.rpm (3.1.0 PPS Update 43; patch #2671: (Default DB cache size reduced to 50Mb) --> verified on CERN ROC BDII that the fix is valid for BDII5.0 too

A collateral objective of the pilot is to verify that all the services running the BDII package (as e.g. site BDII or resource info provider), although they are not concerned by the proposed changes, continue functioning correctly as expected without side-effects.

Planning

At least one instance per service will be upgraded to use BDII 5. This will be done gradually at the sites patricipating to the pilot starting from the top going down to the resource BDII according to the following sequence

  1. Update top-level BDII
  2. Update site level BDII
Resource BDIIs
  1. lcg-CE, CREAM-CE, DPM, MONBOX and DCACHE
  2. WMSLB, FTS, LFC, PX
