(Besides Cal's standard objectives, the SSC could also include the specific HEP SSC objectives that could be):

  1. The overall goal of this activity is to ensure that this SSC is able to offer a stable and reliable infrastructure which allows the efficient storage of data and the access to them in an easy and fast way to more than 10000 researchers placed all over the world. Support of the HEP communities and their users is esential for ensuring this objective. The term support covers a wide range of activities which require also different expertise level. The most important areas of this support unit cover the following aspects:
    1. Liaison between the communities and the services, operations and middelware development teams
    2. Guide to implement the Grid infrastructure into the specific computing frameworks of each community
    3. Evaluation of new features and services according the specific communities requirements
    4. Community specific services maintenance and monitoring , user and VO support
    5. User documentation and training
  2. In addition the SSC wants to keep exporting the Grid infrastructure used by High Energy Physics to further European and international initiatives as the HEP community has been already making in the past in the context of the EGEE project.
    • As one of the Strategic Discipline clusters largely demostrated in the EGEE context, High Energy Physics is a central SSC for the development of structures applicable to any other community. The HEP community has very strict requirements in terms of service performance and operation scalability in order to accomplish the ambitious goals of the applications represented by this SSC. This level of requirements has fostered new communities to join the HEP Grid infrastructure getting benefits of the services, operations and support used by HEP. The HEP infrastructue has been widely used to promote the community building able to scalate to with a minimun manpower impact. This makes of HEP a key environment to promote the e-Infrastructure in Europe to regional and international level.
  3. Based on this infrastructure, the SSC expects a reinforcement of the already established collaborations with private enterprises, business and United Nations initiatives enabling a wide European Grid cooperation

The SSC activity focuses its efforts in three areas:

  1. User-analysis and application support including Grid implementation into the computing models of each SSC community. Although the applications belonging to this SSC work all together in a common research environment, all of them have specific goals. These different goals lead to important differences in the computing models and as consecuence in the Grid requirements. An specific Grid support is therefore a key aspect neccessary to accomplish the goals of these applications. The support team needs to have a deep knowledge of both the computing model of the applications and the Grid infrastructure which better fits these models. Since more than 5 years a specific and dedicated support model per applications has demostrated to be a succesfull approach in ambitious projects as WLCG. Similar approach should be applied to the end-user analysis where researchers placed all over the world will need to access data through the computing models of their communities.
  2. Key aspects of services and operation protocols. The support has to act as the liaison betwen the application and the participants in the project (computing centers, site administrators, middelware developers) ensuring the application requirements are fullfiled.
  3. Development and maintenance of standards and common tools generic enough to be used by any other community such that this SSC will be able to contribute to the build of new and existing user communities also beyond HEP.

Beginning of the document, maybe as an introductory part, maybe called: Activity Description

Some explanation to the text:

It has tried to include some of the fundamental points of the Work Programme. The fundamental points which have been tried to be covered are:

  1. Fundamental roles of the research infrastructures defined in the work programme as the core of the "Knowledge triangle" based in 3 points; 1) innovation, 2) Research, 3) Education
  2. The expected impact of any SSC is the following (page 16 of the work programme):
  1. Effectivenes of european research through the broader use of e-Infrastructures by research communities
  2. Emergence of virtual research communities of European and international dimension
  3. Easier development and adoption of standards, common tools, procedures and best practises
  4. Use of e-Infrastructures services and tools by actors from new disciplines
  5. Increase quality and attractiveness of e-Infrastuctures
