Week of 190930

WLCG Operations Call details

  • For remote participation we use the Vidyo system. Instructions can be found here.

General Information

  • The purpose of the meeting is:
    • to report significant operational issues (i.e. issues which can or did degrade experiment or site operations) which are ongoing or were resolved after the previous meeting;
    • to announce or schedule interventions at Tier-1 sites;
    • to inform about recent or upcoming changes in the experiment activities or systems having a visible impact on sites;
    • to provide important news about the middleware;
    • to communicate any other information considered interesting for WLCG operations.
  • The meeting should run from 15:00 Geneva time until 15:20, exceptionally to 15:30.
  • The SCOD rota for the next few weeks is at ScodRota
  • General information about the WLCG Service can be accessed from the Operations Portal
  • Whenever a particular topic needs to be discussed at the operations meeting requiring information from sites or experiments, it is highly recommended to announce it by email to wlcg-scod@cernSPAMNOTNOSPAMPLEASE.ch to allow the SCOD to make sure that the relevant parties have the time to collect the required information, or invite the right people at the meeting.

Best practices for scheduled downtimes

  • local: Kate (WLCG, chair), Julia (WLCG), Maarten (ALICE, WLCG), Gavin (Computing), Eddie (storage), Borja (monitoring), Julien (storage)
  • remote: Andrzej (ATLAS), Christoph (CMS), Raja (LHCb), Darren (RAL), Di (TRIUMF), Xavier (KIT), Mike (ASGC), Onno (NL-T1), Pepe (PIC), David B (IN2P3)

Experiments round table:

  • ALICE -
    • NTR

  • LHCb reports ( raw view) -
    • Activity:
      • MC, user jobs and data restripping.
      • Continuing staging (tape recall) at all T1s
    • Issues:
      • RAL:
        • GGUS:142350; (old ticket) Under investigation : problem with user jobs at RAL.
        • GGUS:143323; Problem deleting files on ECHO at RAL.
        • RAL running jobs at much lower level since last Wednesday, than previously

Sites / Services round table:

  • BNL: nc
  • CNAF: nc
  • EGI: nc
  • FNAL: nc
  • IN2P3: NTR
  • KISTI: nc
  • KIT:
    • Nearline Storage downtime ends today as planned without any issues.
    • KIT network again had severe issues. However, GridKa/FZK-LCG2 was unaffected by that, as far as we can tell.
  • NDGF: 4h Downtime for UiO pools tomorrow. Some Atlas data unavailable.
  • NL-T1: NTR
  • NRC-KI: nc
  • OSG: nc
  • PIC: PIC is working on DCache upgrade from version 4.2.43 to version 5.2 as requested by DOMA.
Maarten mentioned the end of the year deadline is not hard, but WLCG would prefer T1s setting example for T2s
  • RAL: NTR

  • CERN computing services: NTR
  • CERN storage services:
    • OTG0052404: The FTS ATLAS instance will be upgraded on Tuesday the 1st of October from FTS v3.8.5 to FTS v3.9.2. The FTS 3.9 series brings performance improvements over the 3.8 series. During the intervention the instance will be down due to a required DB schema upgrade from 9:30 until 17:30, therefore, as already agreed with ATLAS, the transfers will be temporary submitted to the FTS Pilot instance.

  • CERN databases: nc
  • Monitoring:
    • Final availability reports for August have been sent around
  • MW Officer: nc
  • Networks: GGUS:143218 GGUS:143220 An issue within Janet network caused some UK sites to be unreachable via IPv6 (16th - 23rd Sept)
  • Security: NTR (apologies, won't be able to attend)
