Week of 191209

WLCG Operations Call details

  • For remote participation we use the Vidyo system. Instructions can be found here.

General Information

  • The purpose of the meeting is:
    • to report significant operational issues (i.e. issues which can or did degrade experiment or site operations) which are ongoing or were resolved after the previous meeting;
    • to announce or schedule interventions at Tier-1 sites;
    • to inform about recent or upcoming changes in the experiment activities or systems having a visible impact on sites;
    • to provide important news about the middleware;
    • to communicate any other information considered interesting for WLCG operations.
  • The meeting should run from 15:00 Geneva time until 15:20, exceptionally to 15:30.
  • The SCOD rota for the next few weeks is at ScodRota
  • General information about the WLCG Service can be accessed from the Operations Portal
  • Whenever a particular topic needs to be discussed at the operations meeting requiring information from sites or experiments, it is highly recommended to announce it by email to wlcg-scod@cernSPAMNOTNOSPAMPLEASE.ch to allow the SCOD to make sure that the relevant parties have the time to collect the required information, or invite the right people at the meeting.

Best practices for scheduled downtimes

Monday

Attendance:

  • local: Julia (WLCG), Kate (chair, WLCG), Maarten (WLCG, ALICE), Marcelo (LHCb), Ivan (ATLAS), Vincent (security), Paul (storage), Borja (monit), Alberto (monit)
  • remote: Darren (RAL), Andrew (NL-T1), Christoph (CMS), Di (TRIUMF), David B (IN2P3), Dave M (FNAL), Pepe (PIC)

Experiments round table:

  • CMS reports ( raw view) -
    • Issue with central production system (that was reported last week) has been fixed
      • Job submission could be resumed on Wednesday
      • CPU utilization reached ~180k cores (usual level) during this weekend

  • ALICE -
    • NTR

  • LHCb reports ( raw view) -
    • Activity:
      • Running at ~100K jobs: MC simulation, WG productions, user analysis.

Sites / Services round table:

  • ASGC: nc
  • BNL: nc
  • CNAF: SRM Downtime for migration to a new virtualization infrastructure. Affecting LHCb and ATLAS
  • EGI: nc
  • FNAL: NTR
  • IN2P3: NTR
  • JINR: NTR
  • KISTI: nc
  • KIT:
    • cmssrm-kit.gridka.de has been updated to dCache version 5.2. On last week Friday, CMS reported an "error in site readiness" (GGUS:144391), which we ultimately traced back to a change in dCache behavior regarding its pool selection workflow.
    • Wednesday we will update lhcbsrm-kit.gridka.de. Additionally, we will run a migration on the namespace, that will alter the LFN of all of the files such that the new path will expose the SRM space reservation the file belongs to (or rather is ought to belong to... that isn't set in stone yet).
    • The sixth of our CVMFS squids had a broken disk last week, which is now fixed.
  • NDGF: nc (Darren will replace Dmytro from UiO in NDGF ops rotation. Will need lightweight account approved.)
  • NL-T1: In process of deploying new dcache storage system at NIKHEF to replace our dpm system. Atlas currently in process of transferring data in.
  • NRC-KI: nc
  • OSG: nc
  • PIC: NTR
  • RAL: NTR
  • TRIUMF: Last Wednesday there was an intervention on network(downtime), originally we thought there should be only few minutes interruption on one of networks (ORAN), but it turned out we had to take about one hour to fix one of issues, this caused some jobs and data transfers failed.

  • CERN computing services: Electrical maintenance is foreseen in P8 for 9th-16th December - this will result in lower batch capacity than normal. OTG:0053754.
  • CERN storage services:
    • Intervention on eosatlas, move to new headnode architecture, planed the 16th December at 10h
  • CERN databases: nc
  • GGUS: NTR
  • Monitoring: ES cluster upgraded to version 6
  • MW Officer: nc
  • Networks: NTR
  • Security: NTR
