Week of 200817

WLCG Operations Call details

  • For remote participation we use the Vidyo system. Instructions can be found here.

General Information

  • The purpose of the meeting is:
    • to report significant operational issues (i.e. issues which can or did degrade experiment or site operations) which are ongoing or were resolved after the previous meeting;
    • to announce or schedule interventions at Tier-1 sites;
    • to inform about recent or upcoming changes in the experiment activities or systems having a visible impact on sites;
    • to provide important news about the middleware;
    • to communicate any other information considered interesting for WLCG operations.
  • The meeting should run from 15:00 Geneva time until 15:20, exceptionally to 15:30.
  • The SCOD rota for the next few weeks is at ScodRota
  • Whenever a particular topic needs to be discussed at the operations meeting requiring information from sites or experiments, it is highly recommended to announce it by email to wlcg-scod@cernSPAMNOTNOSPAMPLEASE.ch to allow the SCOD to make sure that the relevant parties have the time to collect the required information, or invite the right people at the meeting.

Best practices for scheduled downtimes

Experiments round table:

  • ATLAS reports ( raw view) -
    • Activities:
      • Ongoing reprocessing
    • Issues:
      • bug in new rucio client cause put errors in jobs at several sites
        • client update rolled back; version with fix in testing
        • technically it is a bug in DPM where upload with gsiftp followed by stat can return filesize 0 because of race condition (LCGDM-2928)
      • "An end of file occurred" and "Broken pipe" deletion errors at RAL-LCG2 (GGUS:148234)
        • looks like load issue
      • 338 files lost at HPSS at IN2P3-CC
        • waiting to be declared by ATLAS - there is a bug in lost file declaration mechanism
      • short-term mass-blacklisting of queues
        • something broke AGIS API (details being investigated)

  • CMS reports ( raw view) -
    • Another week of good CPU utilization for CMS: ~260k cores on average (about 200k for production)
    • No major problems

  • ALICE -
    • NIKHEF power cut Fri afternoon: computing restored after midnight, thanks!

Sites / Services round table:

  • ASGC: NC
  • BNL: NTR
  • CNAF: NC
  • EGI: NC
  • IN2P3: NTR

  • KIT: One of the public IPv4 addresses behind cmssrm-kit.gridka.de was failing constantly with "connection refused" starting Wednesday last week 13:00 CEST, until we fixed the problem on Friday morning. The problem was the old machine that used to serve the IPs, because it was still clinging on to them.
  • NDGF: ATLAS (DDM) central problem affecting our sites.
  • NL-T1:
    • Power outage at Nikhef on 2020-08-14 at 15:15CEST caused numerous issues with hardware not coming back on-line. Partial services were restored during the weekend, currently "AT RISK" downtime until we are certain all systems operate optimally.
    • Reminder: Sara-matrix dCache upgrade on Wednesday, https://goc.egi.eu/portal/index.php?Page_Type=Downtime&id=29218
