ATLAS/CMS Dark Matter Forum Topic: Matrix-Element implementation of simplified models

Responsibles: A, B, C, D

Task: finalize list of tools and choices that will be used to generate the simplified models for mono-X searches and direct searches for DM mediators

Timescale: needs completed by end of February 2015, documentation during March 2015

The Forum members working on this subject have the responsibility to settle on the Matrix Element tools and choices that will be used in the generation of simplified models. These tools and choices list will be agreed upon by both collaborations and used for Run-2 searches. The Forum members will discuss and work with those responsible for the theoretical choice of the simplified models (see OverallListAndDocumentation page). Since tools and choices might be different depending on the models chosen for each of the signatures, the generator experts should work closely with the experts for the specific signatures, in particular:

    1. jet+MET signature: JetPlusMetSignatureGenerationTools
    2. mono-photon signature: MonoPhotonSignatureGenerationTools
    3. signatures with heavy flavors: HFSignaturesGenerationTools
    4. mono-W/Z (hadronic), mono-lepton signatures: MonoWZSignaturesGenerationTools
    5. mono-Higgs signature: MonoHiggsSignatureGenerationTools
    6. dijet signatures (no MET): DijetNoMETSignatureGenerationTools
If necessary, the forum members they will include other experts who are willing to contribute or review the discussion and the outcome of the work.

Sub-topics and questions

  1. Choice of generators
  2. NLO implementation
  3. Matrix element / parton shower matching
  4. Choice of scales (renormalization, factorization)
  5. Collection of simplified model files in common repository for ATLAS and CMS (repository should also be decided in the context of the Forum)

Work log and plan

Suggested timeline and milestones

First ATLAS/CMS Dark Matter Forum meeting: 2nd week of January 2015

  • Help convergence of the discussion on the theoretical choices for simplified models
  • Start gathering existing work and material to aid the choices
  • Start testing implementation and choices, profiting from work done within the collaborations and by the Forum members working on simplified models
  • Present a plan for convergence of the work on this topic

Second ATLAS/CMS Dark Matter Forum meeting: last week of January 2015

  • Obtain the final list of selected simplified models to serve as Run-2 benchmarks
  • Start testing implementation and choices, profiting from work done within the collaborations
  • Discuss the choices for the repository of models that will be available to the two collaborations

Third ATLAS/CMS Dark Matter Forum meeting: second week of February 2015

  • Have a final list of tools and choices
  • Discuss these with the Monte Carlo generator groups in the ATLAS and CMS experiments

Fourth ATLAS/CMS Dark Matter Forum meeting: first week of March 2015

  • Compile written documentation (for write-up and in twikis for use by analysers) on tools and choices
  • Share written documentation with Forum participants and reviewers
