Can I see the VM in VirtualBox Manager ?

Maybe. On some Linux distributions and OS X, BOINC is running under its own user so if you launch VirtualBox Manager as your everyday user you may not see the BOINC VM, depending on how permissions are set up. Unfortunatly there is no definitive awnser.

Can I see what is happening inside the VM ?

Yes. BOINC will enable a remote desktop server on the VM if possible. For that you will need the VirtualBox Extension Pack.

It must be installed before the VM starts. If that's not the case, restart a VM : Task Commands > Abort.

Go then to advance view ( View > Advance View) and the Tasks tab. Select the Beauty@LHC task. A Show VM console button should be in the left column, that will open a rdesktop session to the VM. OS X users will need to install the CoRD remote desktop client.

If this button does not works, you can connect using a remote desktop client (eg. rdesktop on Linux) to localhost, and the port given on the VM entry in VirtualBox Manager.

Once you get to the VM console, you can login and sudo as boinc, password boinc.

[Linux] BOINC can't connect to the VM hypervisor

This may be caused by a VirtualBox update during which the kernel virtualization module was not properly updated.

This command will update it :

$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
