Bender: for interactive analysis in LHCb

  • Ostap Bender: (Russian: Остап Бендер; also Ostap-Suleyman-Berta-Maria-Bender-Bey, Bender-Zadunaysky, Ostap Ibragimovich) is a fictional con man who first appeared in the novel The Twelve Chairs written by Soviet authors Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov and released in January 1928. The name "Ostap Bender" has become an archetypal name for a con man in the Russian language.
  • Bender: whose full name is Bender Bending Rodríguez, is a main character in the animated television series Futurama. Designated in-universe as Bending Unit 22, unit number 1,729 (the smallest number that can be represented as the sum of two cubes in two ways, 1³ + 12³ = 9³ + 10³), serial number 2716057 (952³ - 951³). He is also a massive con-artist.

What is Bender?

  • Bender is a python analysis environment relying heavily on LoKi and automated python<->C++ conversion factories.
  • Bender enables real-time analysis of a small number of events and fast prototyping of selections, ntuples, histograms, fitting, etc.
  • Bender adds the flexibility of python to the Gaudi C++ framework and brings the analyst much closer to the running code, with faster returns and a potentially faster turn-around analysis development cycle, much more reminiscent of pyroot/numpy.
  • Bender is a logical extension to GaudiPython and LoKi, see What's the difference between Python, GaudiPython, and Gaudi?
